I would have bid 6 for 2 reasons:

-We may make it: Partner usually should have an Ace outside his solid suit (8 fast tricks), and if we add a queen (Q orQ) we have good chances of making even if hearts are 1-1
-West will probably preempt, as long as he will look at his hand with little defense, and as long as he doesn't know that we have a heart loser

:P dbl
Way back in the 20th century, the jump Q bid meant a running suit and asked for 3NT with a stopper in the opponent's suit. We seem to have a heart loser and likely a club loser or two. So, I say hit 5H and hope to beat it.

I'm bidding 6, P/C.

We might make a slam, but more often, opps will take the 6 save.
Kind regards,
Harald

I am not sure "usually" is a good word. I cannot recall ever seeing a jump cue mentioned in a text and I've never seen it bid at the table.

I think it's sufficiently close to standard that I wouldn't bother discussing it with a new partner. It was described by Crowhurst in Acol in Competition (1980), as an alternative to what was then the standard meaning of natural.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Ah well. Wasn't on my reading list.

IMO _X = 10, 7 = 7.
Partner's heart void may not be quite enough to underwrite a grand .... unless you judge that opponents have got into a bidding rhythm :(

Def double now. I mean partner should have xxx - AKQxxxxx AK or something and could easily be worse. No need to get greedy, maybe our teammates are in 5X.

7 isn't so bad opposite that hand, is it? A spade lead would be worst for us, but hard to find, and on any other lead I would fancy my chances. And it's hard to imagine partner offering a forcing pass with a worse hand. Not that I would do anything other than double at the table - bidding grand slams on murky auctions in Hubert Phillips matches is, to put it mildly, unsound.

Still, if it turned out that partner had the hand above, and if it turned out that we lost the match because I didn't bid 7, my attitude would be apologetic rather than expostulatory.

I don't particularly agree, but I would certainly not deny that this auction hasn't come up for me three times this week. Still if I had, say, that hand with one diamond less and one club more I'm sure I would pass over 6.
