Partner had:
♠AKQTx ♥xxxx ♦xx ♣xx
Our auction went:
1NT - 2♣
2♦! - 3♥! (smolen)
4♠
Over 2♦ partner had the option of bidding 2♠ which shows 5♠ and invitational values.
I respect a lot of the posters on this thread. I also asked some very good players here and had some votes for 2♦. Maybe it depends somewhat on your system. I'm not to worried about partner having shape. If partner is 4♠ and 5+ minor, he will bid 3 minor over 2♦. Granted it will be impossible to back into spades now, but with all of my strength in the outside suits, 3NT may play better anyway. If partner has a more routine 4432, is everyone sure they want to play in spades? Finally, this was a MP problem, so apologies if anyone confused it for a bridge problem.
Edit: Didn't realize Phil was logged in. The above views are my own. -Gnome

I open 1m, and want to table this hand.
If 1NT, I don't lie about a major so 2S, and hope we're not mirrored.

I think if you're not bidding 1NT...2♠ you're thinking way too hard.
Agree with this.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.
