When I came home yesterday after an evening out, I decided to relax before bed and log into BBO. When I logged in, a chum of mine said hi, so I went to his table to kib. I saw an opponent seat was vacant. The opp in the other seat I did not know. Normally I dont sit down opposite an unknown partner, but since my old chum on a few occasions has sat as my opponent with pick-up partners when I have been partnering a friend, I decided to return the favour. Besides that my pick-up partner (advanced) was from a country I associate with courtesy, sporting behavior and erudition.
Hand 1: I picked up ♠98, ♥QJ, ♦Q42, ♣AKJ864 at game all. Partner passes, then the bidding goes p-1♣-p-1♠-p-2♣-dbl-3♠-p-4♠. To my surprise as dummy, I saw partner had ♠KQ1074, ♥10875, ♦A7,♣Q3.
Opps cashed 2 top hearts and switched to a diamond. Then normal play is 1 off. Partner managed 3 off.
Hand 2. I pick up ♠A1062, ♥J83, ♦AKJ754, ♣-. I open 1♦, partner responds 2NT. I assumed this meant about 11 and no major. Decided to keep it simple and raised to 3NT. This time dummy was disappointing but not a great surprise: ♠QJ, ♥AQ5,♦Q986♣10942. Unaccountably the defender at trick 1 lead 5th highest club. The other defender took with his ace and then pondered a little while. Partner showed impatience by writing 1 then 2 then 3. Opp switched to a heart after protesting that this was rude behaviour. Partner spurning the heart finesse took with her ace cashed all diamond winners (surprisingly spurning the spade finesse also) and the ace of spades. Needless to say the King did not drop so went 1 off. Partner then berated me for not rebidding 3♠. Perhaps she was right there.
No open comment from me after this, but as a joke I sent my chum a private message saying that I bet that my partner wont let me play a hand and will make 2 less tricks than she should on each hand she plays
Hand 3: I pick up ♠KJ65,♥J,♦KJ86, ♣KJ94. At love all LHO opens 1♦, partner overcalls 2♠ which I assumed to be weak. Perhaps I have too much defence and not enough offence to bid 4♠, but that is what i did. It was duly doubled by RHO and passed out. Disappointingly partner had ♠Q108732,♥Q762, ♦93,♣2. Unfortunately looked like 1 off with an easy ♦ guess. No it went 3 off with no bad breaks. Partner then wrote "2 spades weak bid x pas ?
Hand 4: I pick up ♠AQ75, ♥AJ3,♦K832,♣84 at red and open 1♦, partner responds 1♥. Breaking (I believe) SAYC rules I rebid 1NT. Partner repeated 2♥ which I passed. Partner would you believe had ♠K8, ♥109765, ♦J4, ♣A932. I sent a message to my good friend claiming at least part of the bet as won. An overtrick was there for the taking as the cards lie, but partner again went down.
Bet won Wayne! Partner then said good bye and then said something that looks unconnected but I am not sure: This is what it was: "de man heeft notabene mooie ruit tegen 2 schop gedubb wat wil je nog meer"
Interesting. Please do not criticise my partner, but I am interested to have a translation. Happy to hear critcisms of my bidding.. You cant criticise my play cos I didn't. haha
