I can think about just one possible hand:
You have a strong hand with 4 Spades and hoped to get it for 1 Spade X or to fetch some more informations.

You surely do not have just 3 Spades, or you forgot your support double AND took 3 NT to a 4/3 fit.

I really think that any other second bid with your hand (instead of pass) had described the hand better, but otoh I agree with you that pd should have found it. At least in the post mortem. :)
Kind Regards

Guess it was impossible to work out. I thought it might be possible to deduce what I held, based on the fact that it's easy for me to describe almost any other hand type with at least 3 Spades. Actual hand below. How would you have bid it? (And I hate people who bid like this too. This time that people was me, though.)

Am I nuts?

Yes.

I understand why you passed the double (although I don't agree with it), but you probably needed to simplify matters by bidding 4S over partner's double.

Playing 2/1 with support doubles, you pick up in 4th all white:
AJ73 J8 9862 AQ2
P - 1 - P - 1
X - P - 2 - X
P - 3 - P - 3N
P - 4 - P - ?
If yes, what's partner's most likely hand?
(And I hate your 3NT bid too, but that's another poll.)

2/1 auctions always seem inexplicable :)
For example what did your double of 2 mean? and did your 3N = minors?
Perhaps partner has KQxx AKQ KJ Jxxx

There is a certain logic to this. The auction suggests, if you assume rational, that Opener has an impossible hand to describe with wildly interesting values that are extremely, almost absurdly, fit-dependent. I suppose I get it.

Lol, failure to use the support redouble denies 3-card support but 4-card support is possible?

Reminds me of someone (at StepBridge) who replied 2 to Stayman holding a 5-card spades. He thought he had to deny a 4-card major with that holding :)

Those adjectives, taken out of context, seem like good adjectives to describe me as a person. LOL Although, some may object to "wildly interesting."

2/1 GF with support doubles, niether vulnerable,
Auction: (P)-1-(P)-1
(X)-?

4S seems straightforward. I don't think you can deny support for partner, then show support later, and expect him to work it out -- and why give the opps room to describe their hands?

Systemically, 4C might show a big balanced raise while 4S shows this sort of distributional raise.

1- Partner cannot have 3S because he would have XX.
2- partner got 4S and distribution but not extreme. Otherwise he would raise before the opponent compete. Opps are white its not the time to lets them find a 19 card double fit.
3- 4S has to show that slam was a possibility at one point. With no slam interest he wouldnt mess around the bushes and just bid 2Nt,3S or 4S rightaway.
4- he probably has a stiff or a void but didnt want to make a splinter because hes got a stiff honnor or a void and didnt want to tell the opps what to lead.
5- partner want maximum information probably because hes got a red holding like Kx or Qxx in a red suit.
6- After 3nt he signoffed because hes got a D honnor that doesnt fit with partner H honnor.

There is at least 50% speculation in what ive just said ;)
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

I have not looked at the actual hand yet. I voted "not possible" but am reconsidering.

Is it possible that opener is 5-6 in the black suits with holes in clubs and is hoping to hear if responder also has something in clubs instead of jamming the auction by bidding 4S to start with? (lol: reminds me of years ago when I held 5116, opened a club, partner responded a spade, and I couldn't decide which red suit to splinter in.)
Anyway, this is the only type of hand I can think of. If opener is always opening 5-6 black suited hands with 1S, then please forget the above.

That's a good general idea.

Maybe it could be reversed so 4 shows a raise based on long Clubs plus Spade support and a direct 4 is the balanced max.

This would leave room for responder cue bid a red suit at the 4 level when appropriate.
