Imagine you're English, and you have recently moved to the USA. What do you do on 4th July?

I had this discussion with a work collegue yesterday, and I was of the opinion that I would want to stay in the office all day and work. She disagreed with me.

Why would you want to stay in the office and work all day?

Most of my British friends like to come to the celebrations. I think they view it as watching a strange cultural tradition.

4th of July is just an excuse to not go to work and party all day with your friends imo. I don't see why the Englishman wouldn't want to do that.

I am very suprised at you Winston...... why do you assume the English are racist and why do you assume we hate the French?

Well, the French pretty much ruined the monarchy concept with Bastille Day and that revolution they allowed to occur.

I figure the British empire would still be intact except for the French buggering it up for all the other kings and queens. :P

The Spanish community in Leiden had their own celebration last time we celebrated "Leids verzet" (edit Gerben says it is Leiden Ontzet. whatever). From what I heard they had fun.

Edit (All Empires come tumbling down due to their own ineptitudes and complacency), I don't think you can blame it on the French..... but it is a nice thought

Oh come on out and light a firecracker or something.

You aren't still pissed about all those nasty things we said about King George are you? People can get a little intemperate in their language during revolutions. Sorry if we offended anyone.

I'm still celebrating "Leiden ontzet" on the 3rd of Octobre in Germany. How nice of them to make it a holiday :P

On the other hand, I don't know how to react to the Christian holidays they have here.

I'm at my parent's place at midwinter solstice, but the rest... Luckily, most of them have bridge tournaments on them.

I would just find a bridge game, or several, and enjoy! Why make a big deal out of it.

Perfect example of why Americans are afraid of immigrants. :P

On a holiday they want to go to the office and work hard, while us lazy Americans want to stay at home and eat hot dogs and drink beer.

To be fair a good example of what makes America so great in the long run, hard working immigrants that are welcomed to this country and help improve it. :) Thank you and welcome!

Now I am going to go watch a great movie, Charade with those great American actors, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. :)

The US revolution and constitution predates Bastille Day.

The English can still be mad at the French. They gave the revolutionaries money and advice.

O.K., then how about Ferris Buehler's day off? Did that predate Bastile?

Let us not forget the French fleet off of Yorktown. :)

Anyway, I remember standing in front of a closed shop with only some fast food places to go to rather than getting real food, because I had completely forgotten about a public holiday in Germany...

But in the USA there are supermarkets that are open even on July 4th, I guess. The Kwik-E-Mart perhaps

In my town, the grocery store was open, but the hardware store was closed.
