What was 3?

If it was a limit raise, I would be inclined to accept.

I would have tried 5d over a first seat one club opening bid.
In any case I bid 5D now over 3D.

Once partner supports diamonds, I would bid game. I don't care whether 3 is weak, mixed or limit (well, if it's limit, I might worry about missing a slam).

pass over 3 holding so much shape and controls was way too meek. I'd probably 3 or some such myself, but wouldn't blame a direct 5 or, an occasional tilt-inducing 6

Yes, and unless 3 is weak, game should be a favorite. Overcaller's pass after 3 is very wimpy and even if 3 is weak, he could make a game try.

South must have been looking at another hand.

This is a clear game bid. If anything, South should be looking towards a possible slam.

If partner puts down xxxx Kx xxxx xxx slam is pretty reasonable, so of course you should at least bid game.

Noone likes to bid their majors..
Given the auction, I would not stop short of bidding game, I've got such a ginormous hand!

IMO
  • Over partner's 3, 3 = 10, 4 = 9, 5 = 6, 4 = 4, _P = 2.
  • You should also be thankful to LHO for allowing you a 2nd bite at the cherry
But it's easier when you see all 4 hands ;)

#1 3D, what was the meaning of the bid?
If it was inviational, 5D is clear, of course
sometimes partner show up with 4 card
support for my 5 card mayor, seldom,
but I have seen it.
If it was intended as weak, ... well I am
one of the most ardent point counters out
there, and even for me this hand does
not look weak, and again, sometimes ...
it happens.

#2 Oppossite a weak 3D bid, pass is fine, and so
is not selling out to 4C.

#3 I dont like the delayed 4C bid, sometimes opponents
bid game after such an sequence, it happens.

With kind regards
Marlowe
