I pass.
GIB bids 4♠ on nothing, any move from our side will lead to 6/7♠.
We have a great hand, but we can't make 6/7♠ opposite nothing.
GIB will find a stronger bid, if it has extras.

It would be nice if 5♠ specifically asks for a diamond control. I don't think it has (nor that it should have) that meaning but I will probably bid it anyway.

Partner isn't going to bid more than 4♠ with QJxxx Kxx x xxxx or Qxxxxx xxx x xxx or QJxxx xxx Ax xxx.

The danger in moving is that partner has something like Qxxx xxx xx xxxx or xxxxx xxx x xxxx. I think this less likely than that partner has enough for slam, so I bid 5♠.

5♠ shows a slam try without a diamond control. That is, it asks for both extra values and a diamond control. 5♦ would also show a slam try for spades, but would promise a diamond control.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I was wondering what jdonn would bid here, this kind of hand seems to be a favorite topic of his.

This time partner had QJ-6th of spades and a stiff diamond so if you bid 5S then partner will bid 6 and you'd make it.

1) I assume no but good question.
2) I have no idea how to know or find out if this hand is a 50% slam at the table.

GIB will not understand 5♠ and GIB will bid 7 over 6. The only 'slam try' that makes any sense to me is 4N, because GIB will respect the captaincy, but thats a little silly with ♦xx.

If its money bridge, pass and take your .68 to $13.60.

Just saw that pard isn't a GIB. Fine - 5♠ then.

The auction is too cramped to say that 5♠ specifically asks about diamonds.

I am sure there are other threads in which the 5♠ bid on an auction like this was purely invitational.

Playing with GIB, I would pass. Playing with a player, I would probably bid 5♠ and hope that partner interpreted it correctly, but I do not have a lot of confidence that the 5♠ bid specifically asks about diamonds.

5 spades asks for a diamond control here. If I need to know about trump quality, there's this thing called roman key card blackwood that gets most of that information just find.
