Scoring: MP

West deals and bids 1♣. North bids 3 ♦ and you compete to 5 ♦. The opponents continue to 5♠ by East. You lead the Diamond K and partner overtakes with the Ace and returns the Heart Jack. Your play!!

Dummy is xxxx, Q9xxx, x, KQJ
Please do not complain about my opinion. I don't have the time to convince you I'm right.

West one CLUB opening with that hand with five hearts and 8 hcp is interesting to say the least. Was it alerted?

Partner's 3♦ not vul versus not vul should be something more than just the ♦A long. I suspect we were going to make quite a few tricks in ♦, but that we are not going to make five ♦, but surely we would make 3♦ for +110, so first question I have to answer is down one good enough at matchpoints, or do I have to go for down three (why didn't I double... at matchpoints this has to be a hand worthy of double... oh well).

The options are to duck and hope to win two hearts with AT behind declarer's K8 (if partner has a stiff ♥) to go along with a ♣ and a ♦. But alas that is only down two... (no double big trouble). However, we can win the ♥ACE and give partner two ♥ ruffs ♣ re-entry, for down three....

What can go wrong? Partner may have a natural trump trick, and he may be ruffing a loser with a winner. But still, that is down three and should do as well as we can without double. In 4♦, we would rate to lose 1♠ and 2♣ if partner has a natural ♠ trick and singleton ♥, for +130. So I will not worry about the natural trump trick.

Next problem, what if partner has ♥Jx and the ♠A? Even here winning the ACE can not hurt. Partner follows to the second round, but we get in and take our three tricks (1♦, 1♥, 1♣, 1♠), but down two is not going to be great, considering we have nine tricks in 3NT (6♦ and three side aces) if partner has that hand. But what if partner doesn't have the ♠ACE and I win teh first ♥ trick and continue ♥s playing for down three, but partner has 2♥'s. Is there any danger? Yes, you run teh risk of letting them "Escape" and make. What if partner has singleton or void in ♠, and two only ♥. East can be 7-2-2-2, or even 6-2-3-2 (what, your partners never preemtp on five card suits?). It is possible that if you fail to cash your ♣ACE when you win your ♥ACE he can play two rounds of ♠, ♥ king, ♦ ruff, ♥Q (pitch a ♣, ♥ ruff, ♠ to dummy and throw last losing ♣ away on the 13th ♥.

So at imps, the defense is clear, cash ♣ACE (down one), then lead a ♥. Sure you might miss down three, but difference between +100 and +150 is not so big. At matchpoints, however, the difference between +100 versus +150 can be HUGE. I would have liked to have heard the entire auction before beat the farm on down three by returning a ♠. My gut tells me that down two when it could go down three will not be that bad... but letting it make when down one is possible would be a disaster. If the bidding went...

(1♣)-3♦-4♠... Surely I will simply cash my ♣ACE.... If the bidding went (1♣)-3♦-(x)-4♦-(x)-P-4♠, surely I go for three trick set. In other words, is there any reason to suspect EAST has 7♠? My partner fools around with five card suit preemptive jump overcalls?

Pd is overtaking and returning the ♥ jack only for 1 reason, he must be singleton in ♥, win return lowest ♥ and down 3 she goes.

Mike

P.S. Bidding seem to be kinda goofy
