4♥ looks like my call. Wrong when we belong in diamonds, notrump or on defence...but we can't always get to diamonds when we belong there and we will rarely get to hearts on a 5-3
Double: gets us past this round. Gets us to 3N when it is right, and when it is wrong, but it will usually be as good as anything if he bids it. Gets us on defence.. when it is right and when it is wrong. We can pull 4♦, but does that show this hand? I don't think so.. I think it shows a better hand, altho the shape may be much the same. And 5♦ is still a legal call over my double.
Pass: there are worse things than missing a nv game.... but it still hurts to go -140 when you have +420 available. The only thing pass has going for it is that we are not going to be -500 or more, which may be the best result possible if we bid.
I bid 4♥... it is putting all my eggs in one basket, but it is the most attractive basket I own.
4♥100 double 90 pass 80: it is close :

Edit: Just adding if partner bids 3NT it could easily be wrong. If partner passes the double though, well nothing in life is guaranteed but I'll be very very happy.

My choice is Double. Correct 4♦ to 4♥.
We agree. I'll post a similar hand from a couple days ago a bit later and will value the advice here.
I just don't see the ♥ suit as good enough for 4♥ and we could belong in ♣ or PD could have a penalty pass.
This hand is a good case for a read on RHO, assuming you can get a good one.

There are many more hands where if lefty opened 2♠ that RHO would have a problem than if lefty opens 4♠. It will be pretty rare that righty will have a hand to act over 4♠, so I can't imagine getting a read on them easily at all.

I think partner has either too little to bid anyway or something a bit better but not enough to either warrant a double of his own or 3N, so is possibly sitting with a fair but not good hand with a little something in spades.
RHO did not fancy bidding, so does not have either a pre-emptive or constructive raise, but is probably somewhere in between.
This leaves LHO with what is quite probably a solidish looking pre-empt and 3♠ is a make like as not given that RHO probably has a reasonable hand.
Therefore I don't see pass as an option, nor do I really relish 3♠* or 3N. That leaves 4♥ which quite possibly has chances or will be something they can't double and score better than 3S making.

True, I'm liable to screw up the next board due to euphoria from collecting a huge number

Agree with this. Pass could be successful too, btw. But bridge is a bidder's game...

The main liability seemed to me that bidding anything pushes them into a making 4♠ that they would have missed without your help.

P.S. 3N actually got crucified most times!
