Hi,

eliminate the options:

#1 Pass - no way, me dont have the bal. of power
#2 2NT - if I wont pass, why 2NT?
#2 2S - since I am not limited, this is the only strong bid
I have, so that is out as well
#4 thats leaves 2C, 2D, 2H ... natural weak bids, and
I choose my longest suit

2♦ looks pretty obvious.

Partner is a passed hand, also he is known to be very short in spades, and so might be doubling quite light - i.e. they have the majority of the high cards, and 1NTX is just a question of overtricks at 200 a pop.

Luckily, we have a preference - our longest non-spade suit.

I'm a little disappointed by the unanimity of the comments so far. I thought 2 clubs was by far the best bid, as it gives us two shots of getting out undoubled (if 2 clubs gets doubled, you can run to 2 diamonds. 2 diamonds gets doubled, and you have less options). It also has the benefit of being slightly better if your partner's on opening lead, as you can stand a lead in the suit.

As it is, 2 clubs by you gets a 2 diamonds response to your left, while a 2 diamonds response gets a quick double. Are you sitting?

Of course I am sitting. Pd knew what he was doing when he doubled. Doubling in this particular auction is very dangerous. Why are you disappointed with the unanimity. You bid your best suit and ds is better than Cs, is it not?
I would actually suggest to you that if 2C gets doubled you are more likely to get doubled in 2D, than by bidding an immediate 2D.

I'm pretty sure I explained my disappointment in the unanimity (basic points: lack of flexibility, can't stand a diamond lead) if you scroll up. Or was that rhetorical? Hard to tell on a forum.

Ok, I give. Enough people saying the same thing means my idea probably doesn't pass muster.

As for partner's hand, I can't give it to you, the hand was given as a problem to me by a friend; I just thought it interesting enough to pass along. She gave me the results instead, that either 2 diamonds or 2 spades (after correcting from 2 diamonds doubled, if that was your option) goes down large doubled, while 2 clubs or pass gets LHO to bid 2 diamonds.
