I think 4D is ridiculous and pass is not, but I would just bid 3D and consider it fairly normal.

4 ♦ I have a swan and they are favourites to make at least 4 in the right major.
So I hope that they bid 4 instead of 6 in a major or four in the wrong major.
I will pay with some hard results.
But I I go for 1100, all 3 Diamond bidders fail for 800 so the odds aren't so bad.

4♦ may very well be the winning call (after all, anything might be the winning call), but I am content to bid 3♦ on these cards.

Two other points:

(1) The difference between 800 and 1100 is 7 IMPs - not something to sneeze at.

(2) It is a lot harder for the opponents to determine that it is right to double out 3♦ than it is to double out 4♦. Often, your 4♦ bid doesn't give them an option other than pass or double. There are a lot more options over 3♦, especially if your opponents don't play negative doubles beyond 3♠.

Just to add to the amusement, you may be slightly surprised to hear that this is actually the same hand as the S4s III lead problem.

That probably tells you the winning answer on both.

edit:... 3D = either -500 in 3Dx or -460 in 3NT
4D, chosen at one table = -800 which gained imps compared to the -1100 from the other table.
