From our first round match against Cardsharp's team, you are playing him and his brother.

Scoring: IMP

1NT 3 5 5
P P 6 ?

(just to be clear: LHO dealt and opened a strong NT vul against not)

EDIT: SORRY I GOT THE HAND WRONG

6 for me. They may make, we may make if they misdefend. Partner has a good chance of a singleton/void club. Also, given the bidding, RHO is void in hearts.

Losing a few hundred instead of gaining a couple hundred is loose change compared to you getting it wrong, or them getting it wrong.

Bidding on and going for 100 when you could have taken 200 isn't an insignificant loss - it's 7 IMPs if they got one of these scores in the other room. This compares with 15 if you don't save when you should have done (assuming that teammates bid slam), or 16 if you double when you should have saved.

To bid on is to play for RHO to be something like 1=0=5=7, partner to be 2=7=3=1 and LHO to be 4=2=4=3. Given that RHO has bid 6 without much in high cards, that might well be the layout. Even so, RHO was apparently unsure whether he was making slam, and has also had to guess.

I'd bid 6, but I wouldn't be particularly sanguine about it.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Edit: This was holding the AKQx

I prefer to dbl.

Partner will have some values in the minors (I can see that he won't have then in the majors) that are wasted in offense because of my shortness, but will make tricks in defense.
It will be easier to make 5 tricks (4 down in red) in defense than 12 tricks playing 6H.

Edit: Without the K

Now partner can have 5 HCP in the majors, so it's not so sure he has tricks in the minors. So dbl is no longer attractive. And bidding 6 is also less attractive.
I still don't think that 6 makes. Now it's a "they can't(or can they?), but can we" situation.

But I stick with dbl.

If you think the choice is between doubling and trying to get 800/1100 vs bidding 6H to make, in my opinion you have rather misevaluated your defensive prospects.

SORRY I GOT THE HAND WRONG YOU DON'T HAVE THE KING OF HEARTS.

I'm not sure that actually makes a big difference to the problem...

6 for me.

Worst case (other than opponents bidding 7 and making... ) is -300, best case is +980. Certainly we expect to have 12 tricks available in hearts, just a question of how many tricks we lose first.

Also, I do 'believe the vulnerable opponents', insofar as I believe 6 is not being carted out, and might possibly be cold. Although, at least we are on lead and know to start with a spade - if RHO has the expected void heart, we might be cashing a couple of spades. OTOH, RHO might be 1048, or similar.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

To me it is less attractive to bid on without the K. There is still a (small?) chance that partner has J to 7 (J to 6? surely not! :) ), with Kx over the AQ.
The chance that 6 is making has not increased, but the chance of 6 making has decreased.

Perhaps I still bid 6, but I am extremely unsanguine indeed about it all now.

Double. I don't care about how much I get from doubling vs how much I make from 6H, I just know I am likely to lose to K on my left, and it's almost inconceivable partner can cover the minors.

Go ahead, tell me partner has a void in clubs and A.

Nope, you can't make 6H in fact it is two off
But doubling (the action chosen at the table) is -1540.

Partner has

I'm gonna pass this. It's a toss, but both sides are probably 1-2 down already.

Sigh, I added up the points around the table and figured partner might have something (wrong) and the RHO a lot of clubs(sorta) and a void (correct). But RHO had all the points too. Do not pass go... do not collect +200......

Those partners who overcall a strong NT on 1 point, said Walter the Walrus. I presume they are getting to 6 no matter whether we bid or not?

In our match, the auction was succinct and surreal
(1) 2 (5) _X
(7) 7 AP
- 2 = 4+ and 5+ unbid.
- 5 = GSF in .
Remarkably ...
  • It was your partner who bid 7 (Partner must find a lead to defeat 7) B)
  • Nobody doubled :) :)
