Scoring: MP

P - P - 1 - 3
3 - All Pass

Feel free to criticize the bidding, but the question here is one of defense.

West lead his A, East playing the 2 (encouraging). West shifted to the 3. which went 5 - J - K. A small spade was played to the 7 and A. East then played the 3. 10 tricks and -170 EW.

Assign the blame EW.

The 3 is incomprehensible. Obviously the diamond A is stiff, else West continues. Its very possible West is 1=7=1=4 or 1=6=1=5 here.

The K gets an encouraging heart and East will find the shift.

Again this is a wtp? Phil has said it all. Mind you the DA lead was a bit fatuous with only 1 trump, wasn't it?

East is probably a good player, he envisioned 3 clubs with partner (given his low club play, you didn't specify but it looks like they play 3/5th) and 1 diamond, so that gives him 7 hearts and 2 spades. If east cashes the diamond before playing another diamond the club will go away hence he underleads his diamond so partner can ruff and shoot a club through with the diamond entry still in tact. A brilliant play, well done, partner's hand is xx AT9xxxx A xxx and you get the magic 200!

OK, not quite, but most people wouldn't have even thought of east's play. I don't know how I feel about it, I mean he knew his partner had an odd number of clubs is he really supposed to play partner for 1615 for a 3H bid combined with the DA lead? Seems like 2713 is a huge favorite. This is the type of play that gets you written up if it works...and also if it doesn't.

Now that I've read Justin's post, I agree with East's defence. I think the defence went wrong with the opening lead - a club looks more sensible.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Not much to add on this one. It turns out I had lost most of the board in the bidding. 4 can make. Partner didn't expect a singleton trump after leading a signleton diamond. I thought he should cash the K to check. He didn't want to release control of the diamond suit before the club entry was knocked out. I am understanding of that. Even though I understand Justin's argument about 2=7=1=3, don't we at least want to consider the actual hand. Perhaps not if you guys think the bidding was that awful. You know that partners clubs are terrible, so isn't it possible he has 5 and didn't show them? Maybe the issue cannot be resolved until we consider whether the west hand was a possible one.

Why aren't we playing 4?

I give west the blame in the bidding. Why do people forget what a preempt shows when partner is a passed hand? I mean what kind of bid is this, it simultaneously missed a game and caused partner to let them make their contract in the defense.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.
