I'm going with your occasional partner's theory on this type of hand for a while and seeing how it works.

a weak hand and no 5 card suit ?.....best bet to beat this is to find pt with a 5 card suit and despite the auction statistically it is most likely to be clubs

i can't read, obviously...
p and i need to start playing lead transfers.

with secondary spots this bad i could give away a lot my leading anything

club could easily hook p out of a card in that suit, and it also sounds like dummy's suit.

I think i underlead the K. (on the grounds that i am still likely to take a trick with it later, but underleading the queen might be fatal...)

This would be the thinking of many I'm sure. Kaplan was convinced that with Axxx / Kxxx that leading from the Ace was best. I think this is a similar enough situation so I will lead a heart.

Gnome leads a club, and he might be right...AT MATCHPOINTS :P....

Yes, appears to work so I will follow the same principle - Maybe the exception that proves the rule.
