Suppose your partnership plays weak no trumps (12-14) and the opponents overcall with a DONT 2H overcall showing hearts and spades.

(a) How should the partnership play Double and 2S by responder?

(:) What to you do in your partnerships/s

© Would your answer to (a) be different if your general partnership style after overcalls of 1NT was to play a form of Rubensohl, so that the default agreements available to you other than Double or 2S were as follows:

1NT (2H) ?
2NT Transfer to 3C
3C Transfer to 3D
3D Ask for heart stop
3H Ask for spade stop
3S Values for game no major suit stops (or poor stops)
3NT Prepared to play in 3NT therefore probably having both majors
stopped

thank you in advance for any advice/suggestions/ideas

regards

2♠ should be natural... Plenty of room... Plenty of jokers who'd like to see what happens if they do it on 3-5 in the majors...
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Or they just lie...do it with a 6 card suit, bid 3♥ if their partner bids 2♠....

Uh, maybe in Romania, but no honest Wisconian would do that.

Agree with 2S being natural, I prefer double as TO, convertible.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

In my partnerships we defend this bid exactly as if they had bid 2♥ natural.

The general rules I use:

(1) If opponents bid something which shows the suit they bid then we treat it as a natural call, even if there is some indication of a second suit (known or unknown).

(2) If opponents bid something which shows two known suits neither of which is the suit bid (i.e. 2♣ or 2♦ = majors) , then we play unusual vs. unusual (cuebids show the other two suits higher=higher and lower=lower, double is general values usually wanting to defend, bidding the other two suits is NF).

(3) If opponents bid something which shows a particular known suit not the suit bid (i.e. 2♦ = hearts) or which shows two suits, one known and one unknown, where the known suit is not the bid suit (i.e. 2♣=hearts and another) then we play double as general values (often wanting to defend), two-level cuebid as a stopper ask (shortness if repeated) and otherwise bid as though they had bid the known suit.

(4) If opponents bid something which shows an unknown suit (i.e. 2♦ = one major) then double is general values and otherwise lebensohl/rubensohl is on. If their bid is 2♣ or double here then systems are just on. This also applies to suction-like calls (i.e. 2♦ = hearts or blacks).

Remember the difference between DONT and other systems with a bid for the majors, like Landy or Hamilton, is that 4-4 is very possible (unless you're in my neck of the woods, who play DONT but haven't read Bergen, or don't agree with him if they have. The best part of that is that since they need 5-4 (some I have heard require 5-5!), they aren't D'ing MNT as often, and so get all the disadvantages of DONT (playing in the wrong suit, playing in the minor when both suits make 2 because there's a possibility of hooping themselves looking for the major, inability to show a single-suited hand (start with double, and then never get a chance to say anything as they wend their way to 3NT. Now you have to lead your suit even if it's best led through)) and all the disadvantages of a more constructive system (have to leave 1NT auctions undisturbed more often, mostly). Ah well.

But in terms of defending 2H, I treat it as I do any two-suited major bid (double is penalty, 2S is inv Stayman (yes, I can still get to the 4-4-4-1; harder to get to the 5-3-4-1, but oh well) 3H is GF Stayman). Not the best, but I have enough single cases in my system as it is; this one isn't worth the memory.

My defense to a DONT 2♥ is simple:
dbl = penalty
2♠/3♥ = showing a stopper; asking a stopper in the other major
for the rest natural (also 3♠)

You'd be so lucky <_<!

Double for penalty. If you can't, assume 2♥ was natural.
