Double. I'm not good at reading a tank early in a hand. There are so many things he might be considering:

1. He might have a so-so hand with spades where he was considering a lead director.

2. He might have a yarb with a doubleton heart (like Roger's hand a few days ago).

3. He might have decent hand without heart support. Yes we are getting hammered.

Double. The tank is relevant and it may make more sense later in the hand. Not to double now is too deep.

I'm not advocating a pass with this hand, certainly. I'm just reporting it as it happend.

I think that whoever raises 3♠ to 4 or 4m to 5 is probably a bit batty, though. That's the main issue.

At the table I bid 3NT. Boos all around?

I like 3NT. A slight worry is that RHO may have been thinking about raising with three-card support and a balanced hand. On the other hand, maybe he was thinking about raising with a doubleton.

If I doubled and partner bid 3♠, I'd bid 3NT, which I think shows this hand-type - somewhere between a takeout double and a 3NT bid. The trouble with double is that I won't know what to do after a response of 4♣/♦ .
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Me no like 3N. We have a single heart stop that gets knocked out at T2 and no source of tricks. Yes we have a little extra, but I don't think thats enough.

Mind you, 3N could easily work opposite the right 3244 7 count.

Close betweem double and 3nt. If decent means honest, I choose double.

Without the tank, I would bid 3nt.

I concede double could work out better but our primary aim if we double is five spades with partner or maybe four spades and a playable Moysian. That seems like a small target to me.

I'm a 3NT person. My wife and another partner say I bid 3NT too much. I make 3NT here when I should not, though. This makes them angry.

I think 3N is a good call, and one I'd make at the table, but I don't have a problem with a partner that doubles, either.
