Playing with a callous junior you pick up the following hand at all white, IMPs:

xx
Ax
A98x
Q97xx

pass - (pass) - 2D - (2S)
???
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

3 only.

Here, I don't want to bid 4 because fetching a 4 bid doesn't seem like a triumph - I have no reason to think 4 will go down.

Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Five is right out.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

4. I have no reason to think 4 will make and I have no reason to think LHO won't bid it if I pussy (foot) around with 3.

4D. This puts on some pressure. A 3D bid is really a nothing bid and gives the opps far too much room.

This really depends on who pard is. If he is the type to open at the 1 level with a 5 card suit and weak hand fairly often then I would bid 4. If he is the type to open at the 2 level with a 5 card suit and weak hand fairly often I would bid 3. Since you were playing with me I would bid 4.

4. I don't mind declaring 4, I don't mind defending 4.

I think this is another good hand for 4 non-forcing gerber. If partner has preempted with a minor two-suiter we can find our sacrifice, and this bid takes up as much space as 4. And if partner answers aces, opponents will never figure it out! :)

If you have the philosophy that a 3rd seat W preempt can be anything then 3D is enough otherwise i bid 4.

Partner could easily be 4261 and bidding 4D is the only way to bury the H fit.

I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Unfortunately you will be dummy and poor partner will have to declare :)

3 4 I don't care much. I can see either working well and either working badly.

3NT, suggesting a save if pard's hand is suitable.

Agree with this.

Playing with myself I'd be conserned about 3NT being on. But I'd not try 3, since that would give LHO the opportunity to X. So I'd raise to 4.
Kind regards,

3D.

Lets see, what comes from this.

You are fairly strong, which means one need not be
afraid of defending against 4S, and 2D may well be
based on a 5 carder with strength in the mayor,
and partner may or may not be weak.

No expert here, but I'm curious as to if anybody else plays it this way...

I bid 3.

If the next player bids 3, and my partner passes, then I will pass throughout.
If the next player bids 3, and my partner bids 4, then I will double 4 should I get the opportunity.

If the next player bids 4, well, it didn't hurt anything to try.

Nope, don't play it this way because:-

I don't play with partners who bid their hand twice.

I don't like -790s.

Maybe I should clarify.

We play that walking the dog shows substantial defense. This is especially true for 3rd hand weak bids, which for us are very wide ranging. I would like to know if others define it the same way.

I don't know why one would define opener's rebid as "bidding their hand twice". Seems like a waste of a perfectly good bid.

I'd bid 4C. If that's too much opposite this partner, I'd bid 3C, which is also fit-showing.

By the way, is Justin particularly callous? If so, how does this callousness manifest itself?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I only know it from hear-say (vugraph) so I can't tell you.

I bid only 3D, shame on me. LHO had a monster with a diamond void so I don't think it would have mattered.
