I think bidding notrump is simply premature with both minors wide open. So as a matter of evaluation, the spades are good but the shape and Jxx are bad so I'm pretty confident 2 is enough. If partner makes any move toward game, even 3 for which my holding is bad, I'll bid 3NT next just based on general values.

Fit, but... I am a hog? Don't see any other reason for suppressing the heart support.

Agree with 2WTP.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Not strong enough to bid 2S as a limit raise - 10 not very nice points and really disgusting shape.

2 it is.

I need one decent spade spot (probably the 9 or maybe 8) to bid no trumps in preference to a heart raise,

Agree, but the idea of Pass is making me sick too.

Huh.

How weak could you be to bid 2, given a 4333 shape?

I guess I thought it was reasonable to consider this 3 tricks in support of hearts, and therefore worthy of a limit raise. Does the 4333 really hurt this hand that much? Or am I simply overvaluing the hand?

There are two ways to look at it: You have values behind the spade bidder, which probably increases the value of the spades, but you also have values in a suit that partner is more likely to be short in, which are not as valuable. Combine that with a 4-3-3-3 shape and no aces, and I say this is a max 2 call when everything's factored in.

Having said that, I would not be upset with a partner who bid 2. If there was no interference, I would probably treat this as a 3 card limit raise.

I know. Admitting I have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery, though.

Where I'm coming from is...I'm looking at Fluffy's auction from another thread...

and I'm thinking Good Lord, if I can have that kind of controlless 4333 for a raise to 2, we're going to miss game lots of times when partner's got a working 14 count and can't be confident that we'll make 3. I know, fillers are good. I like entries, myself.

Anyhow, different tack. Would you guys bid 2 with any of these hands?

B. KJ42 KQ9 JT83 72
C. KJ42 KQ9 J2 T873

Just trying to figure out where the line is...

I have no strong opinion between 2 or 2 on this hand, but I think that some people are pointing out that having values in spades is not something good, on the other hand xxx is not good, but is better than having it in diamonds.

3NT fails only on a lead (which LHO will find), but no other game makes. All of our opponents played 4-2, we made 2+1 :) Pass and 2 are imo poor, but I needed some time to figure out which of 1NT or 2 would work out best.

1NT, but if I had a constructiv raise to 2H
available it may well be the way to go.

For me a direct raise could be based on
garbage.
