Is there any documentation available on how to create symbols and smilies in chat or is the knowledge passed by word of mouth?
I know how to create the suit symbols and the 2 basic smilies :) (:
Are there any others?

The suit symbols are documented in the HELP documentation for CHAT although I find the help documentation sometimes difficult to navigate. As far as I know this information is passed on as you suggested ... by word of mouth.

I will attempt to give the explanation below ....

The suit symbols are created using an exclamation (!) mark followed by the first letter of the suit (either upper or lower case is acceptable), thus ....

!c = !d = !h = !s =

and as for the smilies I know of only two ... the "happy face" and the "sad face"

they are the colon followed either by ) for happy or ( for sad, thus ...

: ) = :) and : ( = :)

Best of luck!

EDIT: Apologies, I just re-read your question, just now realized you ALREADY know the suit symbols -- thought that's what you needed help on. MODS if necessary or appropriate perhaps just delete my entire response.

I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I'm not sure about is that what you heard isn't exactly what I meant.

This may be IE specific (I do not know), but if you hold your pointer over the "Clickable Smilies" a message of the form 'javascript:emoticon(":)")' may show in the status bar (left side in IE). The characters in the quotes (which will probably get converted when I post this) are the shortcut for that emoticon. If you click the "Show All" at the bottom of that box, you get a list with the codes shown.

Bill, the question was about the chat area of BBO, not the forum. I don't think BBO supports all the emoticons that the forum does, just the happy and sad faces.
