Scoring: IMP

1-1-1NT-P
2NT-3-4-4
P-P-X-P
P-P

Me and a regular partner were N/S. Certainly the auction looks ridiculous, but given the opponents' bidding, I couldn't really decide which of N/S's bids to find fault with.

In any case, -500 was not a smashing success. Who gets the blame for missing +420 or at least +300?

I hate to blame it on what you are playing, but it's either already expert standard or well on its way to becoming so that doubling 1NT here shows the other two suits. Penalty is useless since if you have that partner simply has a light overcall. In reality the only time they psych 1NT is when your side has a big fit, and then you can just cuebid for partner instead.

There was also bad luck involved, regarding AK opposite the void. That was tough to diagnose.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

the whole ew auction is so silly that either they were incredibly rank novices or they were wired.... 1N??? That actually almost looks normal compared to 2N!
I do think that 3 was a poor bid.... if the opps had their values, you were probably not going to do well.... of course, neither opp had anything resembling their bids.

And I agree with josh re the utility of using the double of 1N as takeout for the other suits... it isn't 'standard' among average players but it will be.

The opps play some kind of transfers after competion? So 1 NT shows a club raise and 2 NT good values in HEart?
Anything else is impossible and too esoteric.

Anyway your pd should have doubled 1 NT for take out.
Then it is possible to find 4 Spade, but at least you won't bid 4 HEart.
Kind Regards

Obviously the opponents were total novices (bbo randoms actually), but while this will occasionally explain some fixes, this one looked like we did it to ourselves. I expected at least a few people to berate each of 3 and 4.

Yes, playing double as responsive would have helped a lot. Yes, we should play it that way.
