MP both vul I go for the throat, mainly because I don't want to bid 1N(underbid) or 2N(overbid) and we seem very very likely to get 200 here vs no clear game (and they usually run on this auction anyways).

Wow, 2N and overbid Justin :P I thought I had to downgrade my hand to bid that . OK I know the modern theory is some 12 points rather than the 10-11 from the beginner's book. Anyway I bid 2NT.

Heh I did not know beginner books recommend 2N with 10-11, but that seems a little crazy to me! I would rarely bid 2N with 11, maybe it's because takeout Xers have become lighter, or because 1N bids have become sounder?

my problem with 1N is this: certainly partner rates to pass 1N most of the time. If that happens, wouldn't you rather have passed 1C X? Surely you rate to beat it like..almost always. So when partner passes 1N then you know pass was better, and partner will pass 1N usually... and even when he doesnt passing may have been right (if you could get 800, which you might if he has a bid over 1N..). So it just seems like pass is better than 1N.

♣8 is a good card for pass. without it I'd go with 2NT.

Nuno, sorry, your argument makes no sense to me. How much better off are you if you bid 1NT? You totally give up on defending and are under pressure of not going down! BTW will leftie really pull the double with a random 5332 hand? or 4333? or even 5♣4M? right into our pard's holdings?

There is obviously a correlation between the two factors, but even with sounder doubles, responding 1NT with 6 points is a little weird since you could just bid a suit.

I think the 6-9 and 10-11 thing is related to the fact that beginners learn to respond 1NT and 2NT to a 1suit opening with those ranges. Maybe it's just a Dutch thing, I thought I saw the same ranges for notrump responses to doubles in Bergen's books but I could be wrong.

I agree, but partner has indicated length in all the other suits, and you have 2 or 3 in all the other suits. There is a good chance they have nowhere to run, and if they do let them do it and then you can still bid NT.
