Scoring: IMP

P-1-P-P
X-P-P-?
Playing 4 card majors, English style, partner opens 1 in second seat, vulnerable vs not.
What do you do now?
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Pretty sick. I redouble, since I am semi-flexible about running to hearts. I'd rather not play a 4-2 fit, and in this situation, I would say that this is very likely to be the case.

What NT range does this "English style" employ?

Let's just believe opps' (first) penalty double. XX and pass throughout.

Good question :P
I think it is 14-16, but am not sure.
I guess we can assume 14-16 while I try to find out.

I was asked but I'm not sure, the pair concerned are not a regular partnership so I can't tell you what they usually play. In their usual partnerships one plays 14-16 and the other 12-14; if I had to guess I would say the 12-14 player is more likely to triumph in any system discussion.

Definitely 4-card majors, though, as already disclosed, and will often open the major with two 4-card suits.

Pard has 5 spades or 4 and a 15-17 hand. Would prefer to play 1NT/2m in the 2nd case, but that means trouble if he's got 5 spades and a min.

Pass.

Here I think it's pretty clear to redouble.
Kind regards,

This hand was from the Yeh brothers tournament.

Scoring: IMP

At the table, South agreed with the majority and redoubled, but today the cards were not so kind. 4 rounds of bidding later, NS finished in 2X going for 800.

Thanks to those who responded, and thanks to Frances for answering the system question.

Haha. At these colors, I think E has an obvious pass over 1NT (12-14). But even I'm not going for 800 in 1NT undoubled :).

Have I misunderstood, or have two people just suggested that at some vulnerabilities one should overcall 2S over 1NT on Q7543 AQ3 Q3 KJ5 ?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I would not overcall 2 at any colors. Sorry if this wasn't clear; I meant that at these colors, it is obvious, not just obvious :P.

ok that was a stupid comment. but add a few spots here and there to east's spades (making his hand a pass over 1-x-p) and then my argument becomes (at least somewhat) valid
