You have no entry to the board after you set up spades. Play a small diamond to your ace on the first trick.

This is a classic error beginners and many intermediates do and maybe some advanced folks too :P

I am trying to convince my just-learned-bridge-friend to plan the play - it ain't easy!

ADDED:
Just posted this - and as I was kibitzing a friend - the hand just came up! What a coincidence! They found 6 though :( ( your partner was mrdodgy! )

You can still make it after having won the J, I think. Set up the hearts instead of the spades. On a good day spade split 4-1 so the experts go down and you make it.

I played to quick never bothered to plan as I saw it was easy to make (my usual story)

just shows what a fool you can make of yourself, but I thought others can have a chuckle and it may help someone somewhere

Yeppers!

Trick 1, win the jack of diamonds.
Trick 2, duck a heart
Trick 3, win the ace of diamonds.
Trick 4, duck a heart
Trick 5, win the king of diamonds, discarding a club
Trick 6, Club to the king
Trick 7, 8, 9, 10...win the A and three little hearts
Trick 11, win your club ace
Trick 12, Win the spade ace.
Trick 13, Surrender.

Makes 4, 5 if they can't decide what to sluff on the hearts and end up endplaying East.

Still, it's a good example hand.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
