Playing in a totally casual game against beginner opps with a fairly-beginner partner I picked up this hand:

and opened 1NT.

LHO tanked for a bit then Doubled for penalty.

Partner bids 2 (transfer) to which I thought for a bit and then decided to pass.

LHO sits there for a while again and finally passes and goes ballistic when he sees my 6332 15-count that didn't accept the transfer when he's sitting with this hand:

Needless to say when he cashed A and out and his partner showed up with two exposing my partner as... whatever you might call them... he totally blew a gasket. I was cracking up for about 5 minutes.

As a question, though, would anyone pass 2 with this hand on the given auction?

Passing seems normal to me...you're in a runout situation, so anywhere you land undoubled is a good one.

I'm shocked your partner transferred, though. He has a 7 count, you have 15+, why not play in 1NTX?

I'm not sure what she was thinking but clearly she wasn't thinking straight. I thought she should have redoubled.

Redouble is a bit much. Balanced 7 counts are hardly a guarantee that partner will have play for 1NT, let alone make it. But passing is certainly normal.

I'd think that the odds are with you for a redouble. We didn't have any vulnerability going on but you stand to gain 380 v. -100 or even -300 if you go down 2 just for making the contract nonvul. Vulnerable you stand to gain 580 v. -200 or -500. This doesn't take into account overtricks or the possibility that opp is going to run to 2banana doubled for some bonus greater than your partscore.

It'd be interesting see some info (*cough cough, Ben(please)*) on BBOers who went down in 1NT with 22 HCP combined... possibly if 15-18 HCP are held by the player behind the 1NT bidder.

Passing is fine/normal. You are in a running auction. It's possible partner was going to try for game/bid game but the odds of that are so low, and the chances that you belong in diamonds are so high, that pass seems stand out.

BTW your assumptions about 1N XX are wrong against anyone who is competent. Reasonable players will not just double with a random balanced 17 count, they will generally have a good lead/source of tricks/something. Their values will usually be fast rather than slow. Against idiots your assumptions are probably safe.

So
you open an off shape 1 NT against beginners
Pd transfers with 7 HCPS into a lousy four card suit
You pass the transfer happily because she hits your 6 card suit.

I do understand your opps. This is too much "luck" in one hand.
I do agree to open this hand 1 NT and to pass 2 Diamond, this is not the point.

But from their lho point of view, you had three unusual bids and surprisingly landed on your feet. That smells like a rat, even if your bidding was reasonable.
Kind Regards

Roland

Hi,

no, I would not pass 2D.
Passing will look stupid, if partner showes
up with a game going hand.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: I wrote this, overlooking the fact, that
there was a penalty double, now pass is most
likely the best bid.

Yes I'd pass. Your beginner opp should not go ballistic as she makes agaree with Roland though, I don't find anything particularly funny here.

I also don't see the fun in this. It's a normal auction, and a typical reaction from beginners...
