1S. Why would I bid 2S on such a junky suit and 8 HCP outside my suit? Any scoring, any colors, any 1-level opener.

Hi,

I dont see the auction, I guess East
opened and I am South?

1S.

Given the vulnerability, I am too strong
for 2S, and I am not prepared to bis 3S.

With kind regards

Corrected now; sorry.
Reason I asked was a vu-graph commentator suggested 2 and went on to explain that 2 is better than 1 because suit is not good !!

1. This looks nothing like a 2 call to me. Yeah I know the Zia-ites would preempt this hand expecting to score all their minor winners, but pard isn't a passed hand and will frequently misjudge.

Agree to 1, though on some occasions I might try 2.

1S, no conditions whatsoever that would make me bid 2S.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

2 is ill-disciplined and misleading. 1 is normal.

Ummm...are you sure North wasn't dealer? Then I'd consider 2.

1S

re: 2S, agree with others who point out that pard will not expect that much stuff outside spades. Don't think the spade suit is a problem though (depends on your agreements).

In Shanghai last year, Zia, Daniela Von Arnim and others, W/R, overcalled 1H with 2S with QT8432 2 KT97 T9.

Daniela and others, W/W, did likewise with QT6543 J96 T85 T.

These hands are different, as they have some offence and little defence. I doubt if the Italians bid 2 on these hands.

I wonder if the vugraph commentator was Australian? From what I've seen this is more common there.
