Playing teams, you deal and get this collection:

1 - Do you open it?

2 - (Okay, even if your response to #1 was negative, please assume you would open) State your reasoning regarding a 1C compared to a 1S opening.

Thx :)
It all makes perfect sense, expressed in dollars and cents.

1. yes, not even close. Okay, it should be close, many losers, few HCps but I would still always open it.

2. 1 Club is systematically and I see no reason to to leave the system with a 4423 hand just because of the honour location. I would open 1 Spade in thirs seat only.
Kind Regards

1. Yes, 1NT.

2. Uh, sorry, strong NT of course, so 1♣ it is for me.

3rd and 4th seat 1S. 1C or weak nt otherwise. Passing is losing bridge imho.

For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

1- Do you open it? Yes. Want a full explaination? I use ZAR points to decide. This had 12 hcp, 3 control points, 10 distributional points. That comes to 25. I open almost every legal hand with 26 ZAR points and most with 25 ZAR points and a four+ spade suit.

State your reasoning regarding a 1C compared to a 1S opening. Systemically this is a 1♣ opening for most of us, as five card majors is all the rage. This is a clear 1♠ opener in 3rd seat. Reverse the red suits, and I would violate the five card major rule at imps and open 1♠ as it makes it more difficult for opponents to find a potential heart fit. But with four hearts, if we open 1♠ it makes it more difficult for us to find a ♥ fit so here. At matchpoint you might consider opening 1♠ in an effort to get a ♠ lead should you be outbid on the hand. However, I will go with the field bid of 1♣ even there when holding 4♥'s.

1♣ as long as partner is not a passed hand. Pass is, well, outrageous.

Why 1♣? Because we have a partner. We play FIVE card majors, that means our majors shall be five. Four thou shalt not count.

1) With a pick up partner, easy pass, otherwise.....one club...no problem yet.

I play 4cM and bid them up-the-line but Hate THIS hand. Lie 1S as if 5-suit to rebid 2H.

This is a clear opening to me.
Systemically I open this 1♣ in 1st and 2nd seat and 1♠ in 3rd and 4th.
Kind regards,
Harald

I would always open this 1♣ and I don't understand why this is opened 1♠ in 3th or 4th hand. If I open 1♠ then I expect partner to bid 1NT (also not forcing in 2/1?) and I will not be happy about loosing the ♥ fit.

I open it but I don't love it. The ♠J is somewhat wasted.

I would open 1♠ playing a semi-forcing NT and 1♣ playing a forcing NT.

1) I open because I have an opening hand...
2) I open 1♣ because 1♠ would promise 5, and I only have 4 (four)...
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I pass. Phil says the jack of spades might be wasted, but he forgot about those other jacks...

third seat openings should be judged by different rules than 1st and second seat openings, especially on weak hands.

On this hand, game is very unlikely after two passes. More accurately, game OUR way is very unlikely, while game or even slam their way remains possible.

In 1st or 2nd chair, our constructive bidding takes precedence.. we make our systemic opening so that partner, with a good hand, can participate meaningfully.

In 3rd seat, we have to pay somewhat more attention, than we do in 1st or 2nd, to two other factors: preemption and lead-directing.

I usually open 1♥ with modest hands in 3rd chair when 4=4 in the majors, to cater to the possibility of partner holding, and showing, spades. That factor is clearly present here as well, and my choice of 1♠ in 3rd chair will probably mean missing all 4-4 heart fits (unless rho overcalls and partner doubles, and even then we may not be able to compete to the 3 level) and most 5=4 fits as well.

OTOH, we surely want a spade lead if the opps compete, and we surely do not want partner leading from, say, Kx or Kxx(x) in hearts.

Finally, if the hand belongs to the opps in 3N, as is entirely possible, a 1♠ opening will almost always persuade them to aim elsewhere, since neither one of them will have a stopper (well, I discount 10xxxx on the grounds of frequency).
