Scoring: IMP

1-2-2-3NT -AP

Lead: 7

Playing in a local league match you declare 3NT. The opponents play 2nd/4th leads vs NT and RHO contributes the 2

How do you plan the play.

I start by playing a diamond to the 8.

I don't want to play spade, spade, losing to East's Q when I still have entry troubles setting up and cashing the spades. Very good news would be H9x of diamonds onside, but even if the loses to the 9, I duck the 8, and still have chances in spades, diamonds and clubs.

Looking at your hidden text, perhaps starting spades at trick 2 would work, but I still prefer starting on the diamonds.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Top winners

2 spades, 1 diamond and 1 club.

You have 2 more tricks in hearts. So need 3 more.

There are 2 guaranteed entries into Dummy, likewise in hand.

West has probably got 5 points in Hearts, East has shown at least 10 points so that does not leave that many spare to find.

Are E-W playing standard count? If so I take it hearts are 5-3 so I can duck the first heart, and clear West out of hearts should they be continued. I will then play a small club to East KJ of clubs and get an extra trick from his return (obviously will cover should west have the club jack). Then playing the ace and then the third small club should set up my final club trick

If east plays on clubs himself I think I have to hope for a good split on clubs, failing that the spade hook.

Apologies if its not clear but the auction was uncontested, so East may well have a lot less than 10 points :)

The opponents are indeed playing standard count
