Against their slam?

Keep your fingers crossed....

You aren't even 100% sure they have game yet since partner could have some 11 (or even 12 judging by some other threads) meaning the opponents could have as little as 23. And already you are just assuming that they have a slam, and that they were going to bid it. I am not a fan of just donating large numbers based on a bunch of uncertainties.

If you want to steal, I recommend either 1♠ or a blatant psych like 1♥. I would sooner choose a lot of things than 2♠...

Well Josh, you're assuming 1100 is a fait accompli aren't you?

By the way, 2♠ is a distant 3rd choice for me if you read back.

That's not what I meant. I mean you are assuming that IF we go for 1100 THEN they must have had slam. Which is not the case. But yes I expressed that very poorly.

You are sure working hard to defend your distant 3rd choice B)

Guys, pard's average hand is a balanced 7-11 (with a 5 card suit, he might have opened a weak 2), so if we open 2♠ we rate to have some moderate support in pard.

The field was down 1 in 6 or 7 clubs.
At this table 4♠ went for -1100.
(responder jumped to 4 with 4 spades and a weak hand) went for -1100

There were some bad breaks and useless honors in responderss hand. It might have gone for just 500 or 800. The opponents have a vulnerable game.

I think their investigation in that case will be along the lines of what to lead to collect their 1100.

Against their slam? Cool. Win 8.

Although, how could the field be down 1 in two different amounts of clubs?

Typical, two active players trying to steal in the same situation -- and getting nailed for it. If you aren't sure partner will make allowances for your 3rd seat stretch, the risking of bidding goes up substantially. And I'd say both players bid like it was MPs, not IMPs.

I will often open 2S on this type of hand in 3rd seat, particularly against good players.

All the result on the hand proves is that partner was not playing the same style of third seat pre-empts.

This is a normal third seat 2S opener for me. Yes it may get killed, but they have to find the dbl and risk a small penalty vs a game or slam.

It is even more critical to open 2S against strong opps. Get them out of their fancy 1-of-a-suit tools and put them into seat-of-pants bidding.

Against weak opps, I will be more inclined to pass. Why risk giving them an easy double so they can collect a good score. Let the weak opps figure out what to bid and how to play the hand.

I don't like opening 1S. When the bidding gets hot and heavy, and the deck seems to have too many honors, I want partner to trust me. It may work on this hand, but when I hold a decent 1S opener and the opps get out of control, I would hate to let them play the hand undoubled because my partner remembered this psyche and decided not to double.
It costs nothing to be nice -- my better half

I'd like to open 2♠, but I don't have any regular (or irregular) partnerships that I'd do it with. You need to have discussed the strength of pre-empts in this situation with your partner so pard doesn't go overboard when you open 2♠ here.

See Partnership Bidding at Bridge by Robson/Segal Chapter 3 for a good discussion.
