I used to use LTC <= 7 and 1.5 defensive tricks and HCP >= 10, but I found this tended to overvalue 3-suited hands.
Yes I open, but I'm not happy about it. I'll stretch further to open 1M than 1m, but this one is ok. The best opening for the hand is of course 1 (weak) NT.

I open.
The main reason: I believe the field will open,
and the merrits of pass are not high enough
to compensate this.
A secondary reason, you dont have a real rebid
problem, your most likely rebid is 1NT, which
shows your shape and your point count, and even
after 2C, you can bid 2D without any real issues.
But I can understand, if you would pass.
With kind regards
Marlowe

I'd open, but if you move a small diamond to any other suit I would pass.

This is seriously flawed.
It severly under-values this hands biggest asset ♦AQJxx. This feature in a hand with 12 hcp makes this hand not even close to a pass in my opinion.
You have to take into account the location of your honours.
AQxx
AQxx

xx
8 (4♠ + 4♥) + 12 (hcp) + 2 defensive tricks = 22 and is a fine opening by your evaluation ...
but
AQ
AQx
xxxx
xxxx
counts to the same 22 and is clearly an inferior opening - whether or not it crosses the border to pass will depend on your personal style and partnership agreement but it is clearly not as good as the hand above. I would judge it is something like 1.5-2 hcp worse.

I see what you mean. Thanks for pointing that out.
This method was introduced to me about 3 months ago and seemed to be working fairly well. From now on, I'll be taking this one with a grain of salt too.

I'd open if my Jxx were JTx.

Playing weak NT's I usually open. Playing Strong NT's I pass.

K&R (Qxx Jxx AQJxx Qx) = 10.30
DK = 10
IOW, this has the expected trick taking strength of the average 10 count.
