Matchpoints, none vulnerable

I dealt, holding ♠6 ♥T975 ♦QJ85 ♣9763

After two passes, partner opened 1♥, RHO overcalled 2♦.

Should I make a single raise or jump to 3♥?

What should guide me?
I meant well...

4 card support and 3 quacky HCP (which may not be so useful inspite of being behind overcall.

You have 1♠ and unless the hand is a freak, PD has at most 4 so the opps have a ♠ fit, but inspite of that, I am bidding 3♥ preemptive at all forms of scoring and vul.

What should guide you?

I am going to assume 5 card majors....

You have weak hand and 4 trumps, and good distribution (a singleton spade). That suggest preempting. In addition, if parnter would open a hand with 6H and 5S with 1S, that further support preempting to make it hard for them to find there sure minimum 8 card spade fit.

On the other hand, you QJxx of diamonds in "their suit" are a definate minus for preempting. It is best to go slow with values in Their suit, especially when you are behind the bidder.

On this hand, I have to admit, a tug towards 3♥, the problem is partner was in third seat and might be substandard himself. If they were vul, i would bid 3♥, here at equal and in matchpoints, I am going conservative and bid just 2♥, no need to make it easy for them to get +200 against us (or more should partner have opened light)... and our stiff spade suggest if they bid 4♠ partner may have a surprise.

3 hearts. You have a descriptive call of your hand available, make it. Give them the last guess.

Robson/Segal recommend not jumping around when you're long in their suit because then pard might make a phantom save.

However, I don't think there's much risk of opps declaring 5♦ on this one, so 3♥ is ok.

3♥ is preemptive? There's no note about it.

3♥ is not perfect, but its fine. The opponents have at least an 8 card spade fit I'd like to shut out.

As practical matter, its tough to get doubled in 3♥ anyway.

Bid the limit of your hand and shut up :)

depends who is your partner. Im beginner-intemediate and my partners are same level. Most of them never heard of LOT. When I jump with a hand like yours most of times I receive a 4nt back asking for aces.
It's not what you are, it's how you say it!

best regards

3♥ is the "normal" bid, BUT

1) If you show opps, that you have a good fit, they'll know, that the have a fit too and the 3♠ will be automatic.

2) So I consider some other destructive measures:
---- pass to hide our fit
---- psychic 2NT
---- psychic 2♠

3) The only bid which I don't think about is 2♥ :)

I hate it when partner decides to mastermind instead of making a normal descriptive bid.

That's ok. He has to bid 3♠ not 2♠ and they have one level less to sort everything out, especially given that he is making this "automatic" bid on many different hands. Plus if we have a good sacrifice later, this is how to let partner know.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I think 3H is pretty clear. LHO is a PH and didn't open 2S; it is very difficult to see him bidding 3S over 3H.

I think psyching with this hand is pretty silly. 3H rates to buy the contract, which is pretty much what I want.

As a note, I bid 3H even if we play 4cM in 3rd.

Cause, you know, nobody EVER opens a 4 card suit 3rd hand, or pre-empts with 3 card support. Heh.

Seriously, even if they know you have a 9 card fit, so what? If you have a 9 card fit, they most likely only have an 8 card fit. That doesn't make it safe to bid 3 over 3, and it sure doesn't make 4 of a minor safe.

Those "automatic" 3♠ bids tend to run into wood chippers like...

Scoring: MP

Keep in mind, the QJxx behind the 2♦ bidder should make you very happy to defend, especially if the guy to your left and your partner have the spades.
