Who, if any, is to blame for the missed slam in this auction:

Scoring: MP

E S   W N
P 1♥ 4♣ X

West? Beyond that the best answer I can offer is "certainly not north", which is not to say I think south did anything wrong. But maybe my mind can be changed.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

it's just a 68% slam (if they cash their ♣A):P.

just mark down "always preempt opps cause preempts can be a pain" :)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Sure this is a slam I would want to be in, but no one is to blame here. Both Nth and Sth actions are 100% normal unless you are prescient.

Look again. We have a 9 card fit, not an 8.

If I was looking for a swing I'd do more than 4♥. Otherwise this is normal.

This slam is lots more than 68% as you've mentioned, and certainly one I want to be in.

The problem is getting there after the 4♣ preempt ! However, South does have a had that usually takes 8 tricks unless ♥ split badly, which is reasonably possible after the preempt and PD's neg X.

Perhaps S could cue bid 5♣ since slam has to have a decent chance if PD's negX is anything but junk at this level.

If opener rebids 4NT rather than 4♥ what would that be ? Blackwood ? RKC for the ♠ suit implied by the neg X ? To play ?!? (not for me).

It is also quite possible that PD stretched a bit for his neg X and the 5 level isn't safe as trumps split badly.

Preempts can work wonderfully, and as much as I'd like to make a slam move as opener, I think I'd chicken out at the table unless really needing a swing.

Agree with west.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

South should have bid 4 1/2 ♥.

Clearly, West's preempt is what gummed up the works. Both North and South took perfectly normal actions. If either of them is at all to blame, it is South. He has 8 tricks in hand, and I am sure he felt uncomfortable bidding only 4♥.

It is hard to blame either player for missing this slam.

tough hand maybe:

5c over 4c and 5H over 5d rebid by north?
South does have a 4 loser hand. North promises at least few covers, yes?
