The auction goes:

p----p---p---1D
1S---X---p---3S

1) What do you take the 3S as?

My thoughts are, if you had a solid suit/strong hand etc and wanting to ask for stopper, you can go via 2S then 3S with partner just bidding naturally. So then 3S can't be anything else other than a splinter agreeing hearts.

2) What if the auction was now the 1D opening being the 1st seat (so noone's a passed hand) and the auction follows the same. Would 3S now be more convenient as a stopper ask since partner's X doesn't promise 4H as it can be bal GF?

I have an agreement for this, so it's not a problem to me. (Shows long, strong diams, asks stop.)
