4♠ was the correct bid, because 4♥ makes (vulnerable).
Opps doubled us, down 2 for -500, which beats -620.
The reason I ask is this is opposite a THIRD seat opening bid, which may be weak.
I was wondering if you pull back a little opposite a potential weak 3rd seat opening bid.

If partner opened a good 4-card suit in a hand below opening strength, then it still seems right to bid 4♠ over 4♥. We have a lot of shape after all.
So let's do it right away, maybe they bid on when both 4H and 4S were down.

In general pulling back a little is good but here it would be a gigantic underbid to bid 3S.

Maybe for a borderline decision, but don't let the fear of partner messing around in third seat keep you from playing normal bridge.

The same bid I would make, if he just
overcalled, and for me a overcall is weaker
than an opening bid.
The only question is, does he regular open
with 4 cards in 3rd seat?
If yes, 3S may be enough.
