I thought EKCB only applied if the '5y' bid is a jump (or if 'y' is a suit which opponents have shown), but missed a slam after a misundertanding in this auction recently...

(assume 'y' is lower-ranking than 'x' for the purpose of this poll please)

It's Exclusion when your partner wants it to be, and a cuebid when he wants it to be that, instead.

I used to play that all new suits at the 5 level were EKCB after we had agreed trump.

I don't think it makes sense for this sequence to be EKCB, but you can assign it that meaning.

We play the same and on this auction 5y is a Q bid. Most likely opener has a two suited monster lacking a 2nd round control in a suit on this auction.
