Scoring: IMP

(1NT*)-ps-(ps)-?

Opps play precision, 1NT=13-15
In your system, if you want to bid now, 2=both majors, 2=either one major.
Would you balance?

Yes. 2C
You have the majors - go for it! +110 is always a nice score

Not sure if it's a good idea to go for the 110. P would have doubled with 16+ points, right? We should be aiming at game under these conditions. And my two queens are dubious values.

I think this is borderline. Without having discussed this with p I would pass. We might miss game, but more likely, bidding would have taken us too high.

At IMPs, a +110 against the opponents' +90 or +120 is 5 or 6 IMPs. Nothing to be sneered at.

Unfortunately, the more likely occurance with a flat hand like this is that either you will be +110 or +140 when you would have been +100 or +200, or you will go -100 or -200 when you would have been -90 or -120. And the risk of being doubled and going for 200, 500 or 800 against a part score is significant after partner passed.

So, with partner's pass, bidding is more likely to result in a disaster than a favorable result. Pass.

Bidding here at imps? Both vul? Yuck!!! What is wrong with defending at this vul when you have the queen of whichever minor partner is leading (or even better he might lead a major)

2 for me
(I don't like it with the Q's in the minors, but I have always difficulties to find the green card)

There's no way I'm letting the opponents play their highest scoring partial at pairs when I have 5-4 in the majors and a fair hand. There are so many ways a pass can lose: -120 vs -100, plus anything vs -90 and +100 / +110. The only likely minus scenario is when they make 1N on the nose and we are -100 in 2 major.

The outliers favor passing I guess - plus 200 (or more) and the ugly negatives when RHO passed a balanced 7-8 count.

Bidding also has the benefit of having the opponents balance into 3 minor which simply has be better than defending 1N.

Both red, IMPs, I'm passing.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Looks an obvious pass to me.
No reason to believe bidding is superior to passing, and I can stand any lead from partner, which in fact improves the odds for a plus score defending.
Kind regards,
Harald

Red, I defend 1NT.

However, if I wanted to declare, it would not be with a Qx on the side. That's a huge defensive value and a terrible offensivevalue.

...What?

...I have TWO Qx's?

I am probably the most aggressive balancer over 1N that I know but this one is a pass. Without the queens I would bid 2C.
