Last board at a table in MBC, you are half an IMP ahead, and a lot of bragging rights at stake depending on who is winning this round. White vs red, partner opens 1N in 3rd seat, you hold J6532 864 985 AK. What do you do?

Uh, transfer to then 2nt .... was this a trick question?? :)

I'm assuming we're playing 15-17 but this was not stated.....

I'm passing. Not enamored about investigating game with this cheese, and I'd rather try to make 1N on power, than try to play in a flaky 5-2 opposite Qx or Kx.

My second choice is 2 followed by 2.

Partner surely psyched but I'm not going to field it. I'd really like to bid Stayman followed by 2S as an invite with 5 spades. Can we please play that pleeeaaaase?

Not playing that I would transfer (I never pass with a 5-card major) and probably bid 2NT but pass seems reasonable as well.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

2 then:

pass if heads
2NT if tails
3NT if it stops on its edge.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

That sounds about right Csaba, unless you have a very thick coin.

I almost never pass 1NT with a 5 card major, even a bad suit in a balanced hand, but if there is to be an exception this is it. Playing a 5-2 fit with this suit is not my idea of a good time, and we have enough strength to expect 1NT to make regardless. The only real downside is if partner had a super accept for spades we probably miss a good game.

3NT is very poor. Jxxxx is worth < 1, and AK doubleton is worth < 7. And not a spotcard to be found in the other suits. It would be a stretch to say this hand is worth 7.

Partner is not going to be psyching when you are up with 1 board to go and are better than your opponents. I hate passing, the hand has 2 suits with no honors and can easily bid game opposite a super accept. The field will surely be transferring, why would you want to go anti field in this spot?

As far as inviting or not, I always invite but don't care if you think passing is best long run (it might well be).

Are you claiming that white vs red 3rd seats 1NT psyches in late night BBO game are usually rational? If so I disagree, at least about mine.

I am claiming that when playing vs aaron and ira with 1 board to go my only goal is to win.

2, and then the cheapest spade call I can make, if I am playing that 2...2 shows an invitational hand with five spades. Otherwise, transfer and 2NT.

If I'm going to get sexy on this hand, it will be passing a redouble of 2.

That would be totally automatic. If I decided to transfer and it went X XX P back to me I would have drool running down my chin.

Invite in spades, whatever way the methods prescribe (trf+2N or 2C+2S; prefer the latter).

Transfer, then invite with 2NT. My spades are not great but I routinely upgrade 8 points to 9 when having a 5 cards suit with an honor.

I think I'd pass actually. Might not get passed out if my opps are desperate to get an IMP and don't think defending 1NT will get that ;)
