3S X p ?
LHOs style unknown to you but he has won a SENIORS world championship, however he plays multi and weak NT. What if this is the first board of the match? What if you are up 19 at half and have a slightly above average set so far (5th board of 12).

Seriously, I expect a one-trick set, but I don't believe that I can risk passing in either case. So, a chicken 4♣ for me. 4♥ also has some appeal.

That makes no sense. If partner rebids hearts you are playing in hearts. And if they bid 4♠ you are doubling. So you are never bidding clubs later anyway. It would make more sense on a lower level.

With a 2434 p would bid 4♠ over Gonzales' 4♦. OTOH 4♣ catters for p being able to bid 4♦ with a 1462 or such.
My first thought was 4♠ but p needs a lot to make 5m, and if he has that he might raise my 4♣ or 4♦.
At MP I would probably pass.
