#1 I prefer pass instead of 2C
#2 a t/o X instead of 3C is better, but if
you have any reason, that partner may
interpret X as penalty, 3C is fine
#3 X is purely speculative, but it seems,
that you beat 4H

You don't know how many spades you will get, if any, because partner could have plenty of spades and not want to pre-empt in a ratty suit. Partner doesn't have to have any tricks if he likes to support with support without a hand. Even if spades are 3-3 or 4-3 or something it's only 1 down, the difference between 1 down doubled and 1 down undoubled is nothing in imps but you lose loads when you are wrong (easy to be if you are doubling them based on 1 down). Another problem is if declarer is faced with dropping the king (he could have a ten card fit and lack of entries for example) or finessing, he will now certainly choose to finesse you if it's possible. So in conclusion I disgree with the double. Anyway, this is one of the many topics my partner has lectured me about all week :-)

Why not "support with support" Ok I do have 5♠ but the hand is otherwise poor.

North has 14 HCP but I don't think I could make myself bid 2C on the north hand.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

2♣ is a terrible bid with that suit, no matter how good the hand is.

Your 3♣ bid was completely normal, 2♠ would be an overbid and X would be misdirected.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I like South's two passes.

I think as North on my first call I'd lean towards pass but would consider, and on some days would bid, 1NT or 2♣. With South's hand I'd x the 2♥ bid and like 2♠ better than 3♣. The double seems aggressive from North and might give away the K♥.

Hi,

you wont outbid mayors with minors,
and spades beat hearts.
And a t/o bid at least shows also tolerance
for the overcalled suit.

But on reflection, having read the comments,
I would say, that a t/o shows a stronger hand,
although the known fit improves the hand.
My recommendation may just be influenced
by seeing both hands.

It is ok to raise, knowingly discarding the t/o option.

Marlowe

Its frivolous to bid 2 Club. This is just the lol attitude: I have 12 (or like here more) points, I cannot pass. This is not true and 2 Club is evil.

3 Club is hard to critisze. Yes, spades are a major but you should not bid a new suit with so marginal values. These values are even marginal for a 3 Club bid.

I understand the double. You don´t want pd to sacrifice with 5 Club. You have a chance of 4 tricks on your own. You may hope for pd to have a trick.

Actually for me this double looks more or less clear cut.
The old saying is: If they don´t make it once in a while, you don´t double enough.
This time, partners length killed your tricks, spades are 4-1, your king of H was no trick? . My goodness, so what? -590 to -420 is about 5 imps. Could have been worse.
Kind Regards

Roland

Really dislike 2C. South bid fine.

:) Same advice as everybody else with emphasis.

2♣ is awful because of the suit quality. Pass or bid 1NT if you must bid.

The double of 4♥ is almost as bad. Sure, you can envision four or five defensive tricks, but the opponents say they can make it, probably through distribution. This is not a good bet for a double. Just pass.
