I'd probably pass even when red against white.

Even at unfavourable, nothing prevents my partners from opening 4S with KQT98xxx xxx x x. I even gave him a club singleton and still you are likely to go down in 5S.
I think it is odds against to move over 4S at any vulnerability.

Easy pass. Possible (but not likely) to miss slam if vul. Possible (but not likely) to go down in game if not vul. And who knows, I bet there are times it goes double p p back to me. Or I get to double them in something.

The vul should of course be given in a problem like this.

Even if the 5-level was safe, do you have a way to find out if partner has that hand instead of the same hand without the spade jack? Do you have an invite that's subtle enough for partner to distinguish the two hands?

I think moving on is against the odds. I may miss a slam if I pass, but I think I am more likely to be set if I continue. When I pass here I just hope the one of the opps holds almost all of the missing HCP and does something like double or bid.

PD blew it. If he wants to continue, why not 4NT ? Then after you show 1 key card, he can stop in 5♠.

As for you're opening..it is a bit of a stretch to think of it as 7 tricks, but I don't terribly mind it, but Red, I may wimp it and bid 3♠ which is also quite preemptive since if vul opps come into the auction and are wrong, they get hammered.

No criticism of your opening, jilly, just of PD's blast to 6♠ .. neilkaz ..

It is even more your partner's fault, he really should pass. You had a normal hand for your bid. And 5 isn't safe. In fact, 4 isn't even totally safe.

This is a normal 4♠ opening at both red.

It is actually a common B/I mistake not to be able to pass opposite a preempt with a lot of points but no fit.
Edit: The right thing to do opposite a preempt is not to count your points or to use rule of 17 or whatever, but just imagine possible hand from partner and see how many tricks partner is likely to take. Of course this is always a useful thing to do but it is maybe easiest to do so opposite a preempt, and thus a really good starting point to get into the habit.

I would have opened 3♠ on Kathryn's hand, but I can't fault 4♠.

Hi,

vulnerability matters.

If we are green vs. red, you have to pass.
If we are red vs. green, you can try 5S.
Dont ask, what I would do at equal vul. ...

The most interesting card is the Queen of
clubs, but maybe, they dont lead clubs.
