First hand of the table. Agree to "sayc"...

You are West and hold 864, AKJ75, 96, K63.

East is dealer, both vul. IMPS.

With opps silent bidding goes..

1S - 2H
3C - ?

Now what? invite or game or something else?

I think you are GF'd already. I'd bid 4♠

I'm no expert on SAYC but if we are not in a GF the system is really stupid. I would bid 3S and see what happens.

I'm none either, but I still know for a fact 3♣ = GF in SAYC.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

If you wanted to invite, you had to bid 3S in the first place (or deny your support forever). 1S 2H 2S 3S should be forcing in SAYC.

Is this true? I always thought one of the advantages of SAYC was that you can make a descriptive bid then invite in spades.

Yeah, 3S is clear now.

I recommend Arend not to switch to SAYC.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Even if the French system, not playing 2/1, this auction is GF.
Then I bid 4S showing a minimum.

No you can't, actually this is one of the few issues the SAYC booklet is pretty clear about:
1S-3S is invitational, 3 or more spades.
After 1S 2C 2H, 2S is invitational with a doubleton spade, and 3S is forcing.

This only makes sense to me if the only bid with a 3-card limit raise is 3S.

I've got no idea whether this sequence is defined as forcing in SAYC. But I'm of the very strong opinion that is SHOULD be forcing in any natural method.

And of course 1♠-2♥-3♣ is GF.
Kind regards,
Harald
