i don't see how this is set.. if ♠ 4/1 and LHO now void in ♣ (this appears the most dangerous scenerio), seems that it still makes once i set up ♥
i don't think i'd have played the ♣J on the lead, since there is a small possibility of a stiff or doubleton K on my right
anyway, win the ♣, lead ♠A, ♠9 covering whatever LHO plays, ♥ back and continued if ♥A ducked.. if LHO shows out on 2nd ♠, win the K and lead a ♥
if RHO wins 2nd ♠ and leads a club, win and finish hearts in hand.. if LHO led stiff ♣, i still only see 5 losers... if ops ruff ♥ with last trump, they possibly get one more club and a diamond
if trumps are 5/0, i think hearts can serve as a second trump suit.. what did ops have?

I just dont see the point in playing ♣J in first trick.
Are you only playing 2♠? What's the problem? Maybe a 4-1 ♥ split and a stiff ♣...

As you may have guessed by now, I grab virtually all my hands from the BBO gaming site. This is one of them, and the play to first trick went as posed. Finding such hands is actually easy, while kibitizing, take a look through the movie and find hands where the field is going down in some contract after this or that lead, and see if they overlooked something obvious. Of course, if you are playing, you might not realize how much trouble others have with a hand...but if you get a suprizing good result for a normal play, look to see if the field is missing it.
A lot of people made a lot of tricks on this hand in ♠ (as many as ten) but none of those got a ♣ lead, because the four declarers who got a ♣ lead all went down. Note, there is no winning play on the ♣ suit at trick one, so high or low makes no difference from dummy.
I will say this, Jimmy's line goes down, and Free didn't even try to answer the problem.

Must be nasty breaks in suits for some not being able to make a lot of tricks.
So I will play low in dummy and win in hand and play J of
, imagening I am playing against best defense around. Not sure if they win or lose but when I get in I will play A and K of
. I am sure it is not that easy and I must be thinking about 5-0 trump break and/or x-ruff by opps and maybe come up with an endplay and some sort of squeeze to make 8 tricks. Good thing bridge is not like chess otherwise some still be thinking about possible winning line
For winning line on this hand you might have to play against all odds or maybe not, maybe it is as simple as I think it is, we'll find out....

I think it is right to play a H at trick 2. Win the return - C?, cash a H - hopefully and now play a D up. Eventually S to the 9 and see what happens

hi,
i play h at trick 2.
if Cl return play spades small to the K, and small to 9.
if rho shows out put the Ace of spades and run hearts.
if D return i ruff 2 Diamonds in dummy coming in hand on Acl and H; 5trumps, 2clubs.

Probably this post should have been entitled "find the worse line". This is a hand that will win 8 tricks fairly easily on several different lines. The line that fails against normal (and abnormal) breaks is to play two rounds of SPADES. This loses to 4-1 trump slits, even when the SPADE QUEEN is on sides. Why? When youi then knock out a red ace, they continue spades. There is no way to come to a 8th trick then. There is some arguement that cash SPADE ACE (both follow) and then lead a red card if best... but under no circumstances should you immediately play two round of spades. Here is the hands
Even withoiut the singleton ♥ (split ♥ evenly), playing two rounds of ♠ fails. In fact, West's kiling defense is to win the first heart, return a ♠ and then NOT ruff the second or third ♥ so the singleton is not the issue.
The fear of four round of trumps before 1) unblocking ♥s or 2) getting 2 ♦ ruffs should be in your mind from trick one.
