This hand came up in a BAM team match:

Partner opens 1S, you bid 1NT (semi forcing) and good news, partner bids 2D (the way we play partner will never have a balanced hand).

How do you rate pass, 2H and 3D?

Would the order of the three calls change if it was IMPs instead?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

In the world I live, pd can still have a very good hand.
So pass is a nono.
2 Heart shows a different hand (weak with long hearts). Okay it would be nice to show this hand with this bid, but it simply does not.
That leaves a simple 3 Diamond. Downside: I may miss a 5-3 Heart fit and play ina 44 Diamond FIt.
Maybe 3 Heart as a fitjump should show this hand, but nobody would understand this, so this is out too.
Kind Regards

Roland

Roland has hit the nail on the head here. Pass is pusillanimous to say the least.
I like the comment re the 3H bid, however I suspect that most would take this as a splinter agreeing Ds rather than a hand with long Hs. However IF you have a splinter, then you probably have S support as well, so maybe it SHOULD show this type of hand - interesting point and well worthy of partnership discussion. (Or does it show something like KQTxxxx of H????).

So I guess it is 3D unless we can have the fit showing jump of 3H.

Why is it that this theme is present over and over again on the forums: pd opens 1 and we have a fair hand with 5 hearts, but not quite GF. Probably because this is one of the biggest problems in std bidding. B) :( I agree totally with Roland's post.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Us Acol players have it easy.

Anyway, I raise 2D to 3D.
If partner has a good 5341 he will bid 3H over this anyway.

3H sounds like a lot of hearts, not a fit bid.

Agree on all counts.

I never had this problem because 2D was doubled and I happily passed. Even though diamonds split 5-0 (the doubler had a void) it still made on the nose so we won the board.

The reason I posted it is that Justin (who had my hand at the other table) told me that he would have bid 2H at either form of scoring. I think it has a lot going for it at BAM or MP, but I would never have thought of it at IMPs.

I probably would have considered passing at BAM. But Justin tells me that missing game or slam is far more likely than getting too high. Of course I would never pass at IMPs.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
