Say USA2 (Hamman-Soloway, Meckstroth-Rodwell, Nickell-Freeman) replaced their sponsor and partner with the best available American pair. How much would this improve the team, if at all?

Not much at all. People are probably grumpy when they are not paid.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Should this be able to be found out empirically?

Between 1/3 and 1/2 of the time Hamman-Soloway and Meckstroth-Rodwell are playing as a team while Nickell-Freeman sit out. How does the team do during these periods?

There is more to it than this. Obv greco-hampson are a better pair than nickell freeman, but there is a lot to be said for group dynamic. Some of the stuff my dad was telling me when he was on the team was really amazing, I am convinced now that what sets them apart is their great team dynamic, and dick+nick are a big part of this. I also thought this is why our junior teams did so well. This is really an underrated aspect of bridge.

Agree whole heartedly.

What happens outside the table influences what happens at the table. Members will have to gel as a team.

I once believed that the 3 best Pairs that you have will be the best possible team that you could feld, and in some experiments that we did at the local level with this philosophy was an utter flop.

The best Pairs also have the best egos in town and it is difficult to manage that.
I am convinced now that Team Dynamics plays a major part in winning team combinations.

If...if you are reporting or explaining group dynamics that are new that is important, ...ok

If you are just reporting stuff that is thousands and thousands of years old...and it sounds like it........not helpful.

It's likely that they also face the other team's sponsors a significant portion of the time -- that is they are not facing the same team that the A lineup is facing.

This is certainly a valid point. However, given a large enough sample of hands we can (probably) work arround this.

I am guessing that the Nickell Team has faced the top Italian team in international competition a fair amount of time over the past few (say 5) years. Anyone have any idea how many separate hand records from Team matches that we have available? There might be enough that we could try to generate some kind of empiral rankings. (Also, since everyone is playing in a fixed partnership, we can sidestep the whole player versus partnership issue)

I suddenly have access to some butt kicking signal processing software and a truly scary set of mathematicians / engineers. Its possible that I might convince some of them to lend a hand with this type of project...

New terminology?

I recently learned that there is no such thing as a "client" any more. The new term is "student."
