In first seat you hold:
Scoring: IMP

Do you preempt (3♦) or not? Is this close?

(You don't play weak 2♦, so either preempt at the 3-level or pass)

Yes, absolutely.

There is no other possibility, this is not even nearly close. 2♦ would be wimpy anyways.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Isn't this the exact hand that you want?

Normally I'd prefer my diamonds to be more solid when vulnerable, but with 2:1 in the majors 3♦ is justifiable.

Another exercise in the bleedin' obvious.

My guess is that something went badly wrong (such as 3D going for -800 or similar), else this wouldn't be here.

I don't think 3♦ are likely to cause that much damage.

My guess is that partner went many down at 3NT(x) counting on more ♦ tricks than there were available.

I consider this a fairly obvious 3♦ opening.

You have a seven card Diamond suit, two of the top three Diamonds honors, no side suit Ace or King, no side suit void. What else do you want?

If your partnership plays an incredible weak preempt style, this hand might be considered too strong for 3♦. Even so, you need some way to show this hand type. (This hand type is MUCH more common that a 3 count with 6 Diamonds)

3♦.

This is a joke, right? Did they move April Fool's day or something?
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

3♦ always and forever.

And never open 2♦ with 7 Diamonds.

I rotated for convenience. This is the hand:
Scoring: IMP

I was sitting North. For some reason my LHO passed this hand, partner opened a weak 1NT and I bid 3NT. Now he was thinking again, but decided to pass again. West lead a ♥ and we made 3NT. Other table went down in 4M.

Damned good luck.

Take away the ♠J and ♣Q and I'd still open 3♦. Partner won't expect more than that (in fact I could have KQTxxx and out), so if it goes pass 3NT I'd be quite confident he'd make game (overtrick(s) probably).
Kind regards,

Hehe, well I thought so to, just wondered if everyone agrees... We are vulnerable with a crappy suit, but that doesn't stop ME. My lho however thought otherwise, and was proven to be wrong :)

The intermediates are rather lacking. On a normal day, this is a decent suit. On a bad day, it's a very bad suit. If someone makes a penalty pass you'd much rather have QJT98xx than this.
