Scoring: MP

Kind of a humorous hand from this morning.

P-P-? In third seat, I made a sick 1♥ opening. Partner raised to 3♥, ending the auction. Opponents silent.

The lead was the club King. I won this and crossed to the heart King.

For tabel feel reasons, I decided (correctly of course) that West held the spade King. So, spade Queen-King-Ace-small.

Pull trumps, spade out, finding out the I guessed spades right and that it mattered. A diamonf was cashed by West.

Now, West fell from grace and fired back the club Jack. Amazing. But, as you can see, this leads to 10 tricks for the good guys.

+170 is a weird score for these hands, but it was repeated in a small, nine-table section.

Opening 1♥ wasn't that sick at all :D

I'm sure you play Drury... why didn't south elect to use it here in your opinion?

What is so weird about +170? Hearts by South, spade lead?

Hearts by South, spade lead - that gives you 9 tricks: 5 hearts, 2 spades, 1 club and a ruff in dummy.

To get to 10 tricks you must also make a second club trick. How about this? Hearts by South, CJ lead, guess the spades. Now you get 5 hearts, 2 spades, 2 clubs and a ruff in dummy.

I am assuming that you cannot ruff a spade low and a club high in the dummy and pick up East's Jxx of trump. The heart spots are not given, but, even if they were given, that would be quite a line of play.

Club Jack lead gets you to 10 tricks, in a sense, but it still seems that they get to 4 first.

When you "guess spade right," you still lose one of them. You could scissors-coup the thing, to a degree. Maybe win the club Ace, heart to Queen, diamond to Jack. Now, if for some reason West leads another diamond, you ruff. You play heart to the Ace and Spade Queen, maybe. Covered to Ace, and back.

Now, maybe another spade...

Just seems difficult to get 10 tricks before they get to 4.

We don't play preemptive, mixed, or any other type of jump raises after a pass. So, although Drury was available, this 3♥ jump is systemically defined sort of like this:

"Partner. I'm really sick of this. I probably should have opened 1♥, and I probably should bid 4♥ right now. But, you probably have that idiotic hand you always seem to have in this auction. So, I expect that you will pass."

Or, 5-card support, unbalanced, meaty as Hell, but an insane partner. :)

Yes if we have the ♥T that would work. Maybe this line isn't so unrealistic once RHO turns up with ♦AQ and ♣KQ.
