RHO opens a strong club, do you compete?

I would prefer to be 5-4 in the minors but my 1NT bid has to do more with directing the defense rather than with suggesting a sacrifice in the minors so I bid it.
I don't mind passing that much but I'll laugh in the face of anyone who'd say that interfering 1NT would help the declarer more than the defense.

If pard is only able to bid 2m over 1NT, you haven't taken much space away at all, and you have given them info about your hands that they'd never have had if you'd passed. A 1NT bid here has to be aimed at getting pard to preempt to 3m or higher, and if you can be 4-4 vul he won't be able to do that often.
If I could bid 2♣ showing both minors, I'd be more tempted, as it would give the oppo fewer options. I'd still pass, though.

Pass and hope they screw up.

OTOH, if I even remotely consider bidding with this hand, pass must promise a balanced hand and thus give p license to preempt.

I bid 1NT, Arend competed to 3C on his king-fifth and they missed a good 6H.
Dummy (Meckstroth) asked me after the hand if I was 4-4 in the minors. I said "yes", and he said "good for you". I didn't take that as an insult nor as a compliment, it just worked out well on this deal.
We tried to compete as much as possible, but I think this was the only hand where we made a bid some would call insane.
I disagree that a 1D overcall won't hurt the opponents. Often responder passes or doubles and partner will be able to raise to 2D or even 3D. Not that it occurred to me to bid 1D on this hand.

I would overcall 1D* showing two suits of the same rank(CRO Wonder=4-4 or 4-5 either way) 2C, 2D and 2H show 5-5(+) suits ordered CRO(color, rank and opposite) 1S=some 4441 and 1NT or 2NT is a single suiter. Jumps to the 3 level suggest the lead of my suit.
Partner can often make a good guess at which suits I hold and he has a license to steal. I sometimes jump to 2M(with either a short or long holding) with a known fit in some suit.
If I have a minor plus a major fit, I bid anything and he 'corrects' one time. Pass showing a fit. After that he does not bid, so we might bid for a while getting doubled in various suits before we arrive at our final contract.
Maybe you can always get to the correct contract after the other pair jumps to 2(3?) of your 'fit', however, some pairs find this a bit difficult.
Letting Meckwell have a free run with their one club bidding is not a good idea. They bid very well 'if' you leave them alone.
Regards,
Robert

I can't construct a non-competitive auction where the low heart lead is logical, sorry

One of the things I noticed in Nashville was the utter lack of interference in auctions -> in the Mini-Spingold not one bid over a forcing club, the Open Pairs had one Mathe bid that was natural and a Suction bid, and the rest of the week there was one Mathe and one Suction call total. We had probably per session 2-3 forcing club openings (one session we had 7, another 6 if memory serves).

After a low heart lead, won in dummy, declarer pitches 3 clubs on the spades and plays a fourth spade.
I discard something, declarer ruffs and ruffs a club.
Then declarer plays a good spade from dummy. If I ruff, declarer overruffs and later pitches a diamond on a spade. If I pitch, declarer pitches a diamond and Arend can only ruff with his ace.
Not more double dummy than the lead I think.
