I would have never passed 3 x-ed. Second double shows a strong hand which wants to play. I think 4 si obvious. Also i wouldn't have doubled second time with West hand, i don't like playing 4 in a (4)5-2 fit.

The second double is necessary to show 4 cards, isn't? Otherwise I would show strong hand on clubs (with 4 bid).
So. imho the second double is mandatory, the pass is wrong (I have made a lot of these what_to_do passes, they are always wrong :P )

Hi,

I would suggest, that West bids 2C the
next time instead of t/o.
While I may have sympathy for the first t/o,
the 2nd t/o is garbage, just ask West, how
he will feel, if he hears 4D.

Should East bid on over 3S, I dont know,
I would say yes, and the bid would be 4C,
but blaming East for Errors made by West is
not my style.
In short, East had a chance to prevent the mess
West create.

With kind regards

West bid the hand ok, the other 3 players all bid badly imo.

1S is fine
X is fine
Nth should bid at least 3S; 2S is for wimps.
Pass is fine.
As Sth I would bid 4S. This hand does not require much from Nth to make game.
The second X is ok by me, 4C imo is not as good a bid as X
East's pass over 3SX is awful and the worst bid of this auction. East has to bid something and 4H gains more than 4C if tose respective contracts happen to make.

With Wayne's hoped for subsequent approval, I'd like to specify that this was a MP hand. (the vulnerability is good)

The more I think the more I like 2 from West.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Just follow the LOTT. Passing the second double can't be right. I'm torn between 4 and 4. Probably influenced by seing the diagram. In practice, I think I would bid 4 without hesitation.

An initial overcall of 2 by West is an option. In the absense of discussion I would probably double, though. The second double is scary, you don't want p to bid 4 with a 5-card diamonds and three spades. There's no alternative, though. Having overcalled 2 initially would have made it easier, although you'd risk missing the hearts fit, then.

4 is pretty hair-raising, and is no doubt influenced by the entire hand.

As Tim points out, what if pard is 2245? Not only that, but pard can be 2335, 2353, or a lot of different shapes that don't include 4.

I'd bid 4, since I'm really just looking for a port in the storm. If Pard tried 4, fessing up to a big hand, then 4 is in order.

A good rule is that opener can not make a low level penalty X with his second X of a suit he first Xed for takeout.

I don't expect 4 nor 4 to make, and I will try the one wich probably makes the most tricks: 4.

I'd prefer a 2 overcall followed by double.
Anyway, east should take out to 4 on both occasions - leaving in 3x is NO option.
Kind regards,
Harald

I'd bid 4, 4 second choice.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

4.

You can reasonably expect to be forever locked in dummy in 4H, leaving it with practically no play. 4C will likely have chances or give you the chance to go down as few as possible.

If partner bids 4D over 4C, I am unsure what I would do, but right now, I do not have that problem and I deal with them one at a time. :D
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

Pass is not something you want to do here; he/she has taken a free bid at the three level.

I'd resist trying for the 4H game since you have no communication with your own hand. 4C for me.

If pard now rebids 4D....I might take bid_em_up to the bar and discuss over beer this quandary before deciding what to do. :D
