Scoring: MP

Last week we held these hands and got bullied in the bidding

West Opened

(2*) - P - (4) all pass

2 = 5/4 spades and a minor wk.

When we looked at the results afterwards the majority of the room found 5 which makes. Not 100% sure how when East held

Is there anything that we could have sensibly done, or did the opponents just bid it better than everyone else in the room.

1) you make 5d by endplaying west in clubs, cash AK of h, ruff out spades, pull trump and play ace and a club. West must lead a club or a spade that gives you a ruff and sluff. You just lose 2 clubs.

2) South must double and north pulls to 5D now.

3D by North.

The alternative to 5D, 4SX -2,
does not beat 5D=, but is better
than 4S-2.

NS share the blame. North should have bid 3 over 2, and South should have doubled 4.

Yes, I also agree with 3D and double. I think the double by south is more clear than the 3D call by north.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Either 3 by north (a stretch) or double by south (more or less mandatory, eventhough it might turn out to be bad).
Kind regards,
Harald

I really don't like 3D by north, would much prefer a X. That is marginal though, south had a clear X. Sometimes they make but you can't let them steal.

I don't think north is worth 3, nor double, but that's partnership agreements.

South had a clear double then.

North could bid or double. South absolutely must double.

By the way I think you're mistaken, probably most of the room was in 3NT making not 5 making. I presume at most tables your opponents holding Jxxxx xx - KJTxxxx and Kxxxx QTxx Txx Q passed throughout and south got to open 1NT, or north opened and NS otherwise got to 3NT maybe after mild interference. I'm just speculating, but it seems a lot more likely.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Maybe it's good to discuss if North should bid 3 (or double, if you prefer) on hand this weak. If not, South has more reason to double 4.

I have a slight preference for making S responsible.

Just checked the records, (its nice to play in a club that posts hands and travelers on the web). Not one time was the board played in 3NT.

Time to sit down with P and work out minimum requirements and remember how they effect choices for P.
