Hmm. Isn't it obvious to play a heart back? Partner isn't unlikely to have ♥AQJ9 and the ♦A, and he really did all he could to get you to continue hearts. (♦2 is clearly suit preference in my silly opinion.)

Edit: I forgot the obvious "If this is wrong, then I can call the director and complain about the many ♦2's in the deck."

Can't imagine not returning a ♥. The DIAMOND NINE is clear, he has no interest in diamonds. I agree with cherdano, if partner went to all the problems to get a duplicate diamond 2 to use as a suit preference signal, how can I ignore his best efforts to tell me to lead a heart (lower of spades and hearts). In fact this signal is so strong, he probably should throw his cards at me if i don't return a heart wthout a clear reason to do so. HEre I have reason not to do as requested.

I also think he wants a heart, If he has ♥AQJ9, ♦K, and ♠KJ he will be endplayed after the run of the hearts (he would be criss-cross squeezed if didn't have to playa nyway), but I see no way to avoid the contract making then.

Turns out that a SPADE was necessary. Pard had KJT, QJT9, AJ98x, x. A heart doesnt create problems (which is what I played).

Apart from the fact that partner could have pitched the ♦8, doesn't declarer just make anyway? Cash the clubs, establish a diamond trick for 1+2+1+5.

True; with the spade blockage, we can't take more than 2♠+ 1♦+ 1♣.
