3 is not a Game Forcing bid. So we have no option but to bid 3.

1 : 1
3: 3NT
4 : 4
4NT and so on
Bridge Players do it with Finesse

IMHO good enough to open 2clubs.
1) plenty of controls
2) long minor
3) only 3 losers.

I also would open 2C (a notable difference from my past style), but I certainly understand 1D.

After 2C i would bid:

2C 2D
3D 3S
3N pass I think.

After 1D I would bid

1D 1H
3C 3D
3H(?) 3N
4D 4S(?)
6D

In the first auction opener never got clubs into play but did get his values off his chest. In the 2nd auction 3H is questionable (usually shows 3) but does show short spades and keeps the auction low to hear a descriptive bid out of partner. Pretty much south just wants to see what partner has to say (spade wastage or not). Over 3N he has to move again since he's so strong, and north has a questionable cuebid. It's not clear how much his Jx and JTx are worth, partner has shown very strong hand to bid over 3N though and may have x AK AKQxx KQxx which makes slam cold so is probably worth a cue. Partner also has 5C available over that to punt. With such a good hand south would just bid slam (grand is not in play opposite a 3N bid).

jlall may have the correct expert bidding:

I would think

2c=2d
3d=3nt
4c=4d
? rkc kickback if allowed for d now?
1) btw...asking for aces direct over 3nt is out...on this auction I assume.

Hi,

instead of 3D, 3C is clear, even for me,
openers hand looks like a game force.
Responder bids 3NT and thats it.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: 2C is certainly ok, altough this is
certainly a min. 2C opener and if partber
passes 1D, you wont miss a game often.
With kind regards

When I can think of zero pt hands by partner with nonwild dist. that make game...opening 1d makes me a tad nervous.

Justin was just being honest in the auction he would have if he opened 1 (he did say he would open 2 though), I think he knows he would rather not be in slam. I would duplicate his second auction except pass 3NT at mps, which I admit could miss a slam on another day, like opposite AJTx Kxxx xxx xx. Even at imps I don't think I'd be quite so aggressive as either player (maybe continue 4 5) but if partner bid anything but 3NT over the 3 bid I would be off to the races.

As for Mike, well, who the heck knows lol.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.
